The Winona National Guard was organized on May 21, 1920. The unit was known as the 176th Infantry Regiment and served in World War I under the command of Colonel Edwin L. Hixon. In 1919–1920, the 176th Infantry Regiment served in the Minnesota National Guard during the 1919 Minnesota state constitutional convention held in Duluth.
In 1921, General Miles O'Brien ordered that all army units be decommissioned except for those serving with U.S. forces in World War II and a few small units were garrisoned at Fort Snelling until 1924 when they were transferred to Winona where they became part of the Winona County Sheriff's Department and still function as a part of the national guard today.
On October 1, 1922, Brigadier General John Sutter activated the 176th Infantry Regiment for service in Mexico as part of United States Expeditionary Force (USEF) building up Mexican defenses against an expected Spanish-American War invasion by American forces led by Admiral George Dewey. After arriving in Monterrey on October 17, 1922, elements of this regiment took up arms against Mexican rebels near Brownsville on November 26, 1922 and began fighting what is now known as the Battle of San Jacinto which ended with Mexican casualties ranging from 3 killed to over 50 wounded before USEF withdrew from Mexico unopposed on December 10.

Each company fought its own battle throughout Japan while others guarded strategic points or acted as backup if needed.

After liberation victory came quickly followed by reconstruction efforts including rearmament so Army could once again meet world standards while civilians rebuilt everything destroyed during war.

Nowadays there are remnants left behind from Japanese occupation including members manning barracks currently located at Snelling Barracks.

The National Guard in Winona, Minnesota has been around since the early 1900s. The first National Guard unit was organized in 1907, and the National Guard has grown continuously over the years. In 1951, the Minnesota National Guard became a state military force.
Winona is a small town in the heart of Minnesota. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Winona County and the largest city in Winona County by population. The name Winona comes from an early settler's word meaning "a good place to live." The area that now makes up Winona was first inhabited by the Dakota Sioux and Nakota Sioux. In 1858, General James K. Polk made it part of his Indian Removal Act and began to push westward with the idea of uniting all Native American tribes into one large area so they could be taken into captivity and/or killed. This led to much conflict as people who wanted to stay independent fought against those who wanted them to become part of what would become known as white America.
In 1862, after several years of conflict, General George Armstrong Custer surrendered at Fort Riley in Kansas and were taken back across the Mississippi River into Indian Territory. This event started what is known as The Great Sioux War which lasted for many years until finally concluding in 1876 when Sitting Bull capitulated and allowed whites to move back into Indian Territory

These units served as a militia of local communities and were eventually disbanded in 1815. However, the idea of a national guard was not lost on America and it was not until 1861 that the first National Guard regiment was organized. The 1st Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry became the first all-volunteer unit to serve in the American Civil War. In 1865, after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most of the remaining military members of the Confederacy were transferred to Union forces and their individual units became part of federal armies. As time passed, more and more states beganraising their own militias and by 1898 there were over 100,000 activenational guardsmen serving in various capacities throughout America.
Today, there are over 26 million active national Guardsmen serving in various capacities throughout America including: police officers, firefighters, corrections officers, soldiers/ Marines/Air Force personnel etc. Some have even gone on to become full-time generals or admirals! There is no doubt that those who serve our country with distinction deserve nothing but appreciation - from friends and family alike!
