Winona, Minnesota is a small town in the United States. It was founded in 1852 and has served as the county seat of Winona County since 1881. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Winona is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River and is bordered by Stroudsburg to the north, Clearwater to the east, Rockford to the south, and Apple Valley to the west. The first people in what is now Winona County were French Canadians who migrated from Quebec in 1758. They built a cabin near present-day Winona on Fish Creek in what is now Clearwater Township. The first white settler in Winona County was John Dye who arrived in 1821 and bought land about three miles northeast of present-day Winona from Ibrahim Peebles. He named his new settlement after his home country, Wales (Winchester). soon afterwards other European settlers followed Dye's lead and began arriving here also. In 1830 two brothers named George Jones founded a farmstead southeast of where today's downtown stands called Green Gables which became one of America's most famous tourist destinations during its heyday during the early 20th century. In 1835 three men - David Silliman, Lewis Rumsey, and Isaac Nourse - purchased 640 acres (253 ha) along with some woodland lying between Green Gables and Big Woods northwest of town for $3 per acre (0·90 per hectare). This area would become known as Rumsey Prairie after David Silliman’s son-in-law acquired it from him around 1880.
