Winona, Minnesota is a small town located in the Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. Winona has a rich history that can be found throughout its city and rural areas. The first known resident of Winona was Isaac Becker who arrived in 1824. In 1835, John Smith founded the present day city of Winona and named it after his sister-in-law Winnie. The town's land was acquired from Native Americans by David Condon in 1853 and he built the first store in what is now Winona. By 1865, there were 7 business districts in Winona with over 100 stores and services available to residents. In 1908, two brothers - Harry and Roy Carlson - founded an agricultural market garden on what is now First Avenue South near State Highway 12. The following year they opened the world's first grocery store at Seventh Street and Center Road which became one of the largest grocery stores east of Chicago. In 1916 Harry Carlson donated land for a new high school which eventually became Illinois High School for girls (now Wright-Patterson High School). The old high school building remains as part of Illinois Elementary School today. From 1925 until 1961, WINONA TV station aired programming from channel 11 on a tower outside of downtown Winona; this permit allowed only amateur television transmissions due to height restrictions at that time within Hennepin County! On July 1st 1907 – less than 2 years afterWINONA TV station began operations – local firemen responded to an alarm call reporting a large fire near Third Street & University Avenue; when they arrived they discovered more than 20 buildings on fire! This event led to what is now North Park Place being renamed "Station Square" in honor of those firefighters who fought this epic blaze! The City Council approved plans for a new library building (which would become Main Library) on Fourth Street between University Avenue & Union Boulevard; construction began in 1914 but due to World War I funding shortages the library never opened its doors! A similar problem occurred when plans were made for another library building on Sixth Street between University Ave & Union Boulevard; however this project also failed to gain funding so it too remained unopened! In 1927 WINONA voters passed a $50 per month tax levy against property values above $200/- becoming one ofMinnesota’s earliest voter initiatives! This measure helped finance much needed public works projects such as street paving etc.; many homes still remain plastered with “supporting evidence” dating back to this early days of our community’s existence!
