Hanson had been born on December 3rd 1793 near Frederiksborg Castle in Copenhagen and died on July 8th 1860 in Winona Township just east of present day downtownWinona was platted on March 1st, 1858 by Jens Jensen with the help of local citizen John Blythe as part of a larger township survey that also included Fillmore and Nisswa townships adjoining it In 1865 David Svea started brewing beer at what is now called Svea's Brewery while lumbermen were cutting down trees near town center during the winter months; this early brewery still stands today within walking distance of downtown Winona today In 1869 Gustavus Swenson started farming land west of town along Highway 58 where he raised corn, beans, sweet potatoes and other vegetables until his death in 1922 There were also several small businesses established around town including one run by Hennepin County sheriff James Fenton that sold liquor until Prohibition began In 1872 Jens Olsen bought 4 acres (1 ha) northeast of town off US 59 for $600 He built a cabin there named Olafsberg which still stands today next to Moberg Lake . When Duluth got its own City government in 1912Olsen decided to move back into Winona again becoming mayor from 1924 through 1928 before moving out altogether after Duluth's incorporation into cities status In 1930 Mayor Olsen donated land northwest of town park which formed what is now Roosevelt Park In 1931 City Council meetings were held at Century College auditorium which later served as Municipal Building Until 1935 when Municipal buildings were destroyed by fire during a power outage Municipal meetings continued upstairs at First Avenue Baptist Church until 1936 when they moved outdoors to Pioneer Hall On January 25th 1937 City Council voted 2-1 not to annex any more villages or townships so as not to create too much duplicate government services however future annexation proposals did occur After World War II some residents desired Sayreville (then known as Grant Consolidated) development adjacent to their community while others wanted more centralized government services so school consolidation happened effective September 1948 with all high schools serving within Village boundaries with Sayreville having become unincorporated Again taxes went up following these consolidations contributing significantly towards building new civic centers including Stroud Auditorium & Aquarium located just east across street from Main Library since 1957
