Willmar is a city in Minnesota, United States. The population was 24,567 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Hennepin County and home to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. The City of Willmar was founded in 1854 as a small log settlement on an old Indian trading post near what is now Minneapolis. The post office was first opened in 1855 and named for Rear Admiral Augustus Ewing, commander of US Naval forces during the American Civil War. In 1857, Willmar had its first schoolhouse, which served as both a public school and a day-care center for workers at nearby mills. In 1870, Presbyterian missionaries arrived from Scotland to establish congregations at Willmar and other areas around the state of Minnesota. The following year saw the opening of one of America's first oil refineries on North Dakota's Bottineau River by Danish immigrant Ole Kirk Christiansen; this event helped spur development in what would become Minneapolis and St Paul. By 1876, Willmar had become an important stop along the Northern Pacific Railroad network; it also became home to America's first electric light bulb installation that year thanks to efforts by local entrepreneur Julius Schmidtke. During World War II, much activity took place in downtown Willmar as war production moved into town from rural locations across the state. One example was production of aluminum cans that led to the creation of adjacent plant jobs while military veterans returned home with new skills essential to postwar industries such as refrigeration and air conditioning manufacturing (Willmar produced more aluminum cans than any other city). Afterriegs years were marked by increased growth in demand for housing services then locally available goods like groceries buttermilk before recession set in later that decade followed by declines in job opportunities throughout Minnesotan economy statewide beginning around 1990-1991 due largely to globalization/the internet/global recession etc.). Willmar is a town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The name Willmar comes from the Dakota Sioux word wállamár meaning "place where people go to hunt." The townsite was laid out by Major George Armstrong Custer on November 20, 1871 during his evaluation of potential sites for a military post south of Minneapolis.Custer named the site after General Winfield Scott's cavalry unit which had been destroyed near Fort Snelling in 1864. In 1902, Willmar residents responded to an advertisement placed by the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) seekingakers to establish a religious community with common interests and services such as education, health care and farming. WCTU leadership believed that this would be a model for other social welfare organizations similar to themselves across America. On October 7, 1907 local farmers organized a meeting at Whichcreek Schoolhouse to discuss ways to improve their land and raise money necessary for building the first church complex in Willmar – First Presbyterian Church (later renamed Christ Lutheran). At first it was thought that only men could donate land but soon women began contributing as well and by 1912 there were six churches in existence with over 50 members each! On October 15th 1912 First Presbyterian congregation dedicated their new edifice – now known as Willmar Lutheran Church – with Reverend Driggs officiating! The following year on February 3rd 1915 First Baptist Church also opened their doors after being built using donated materials from both denominations! In 1916 Second Presbyterian Church followed suit and eventually all 10 congregations served within the town limits! Today there are more than 100 members affiliated with various denominations including Methodist, Episcopal, Lutheran and Catholic all based in downtown Willmar!
Willmar was founded in 1851 by George Willmar and his brother, John. The town had a population of around 100 people when it was first established. In 1897, the town acquired its current name, which has been used ever since. A fire destroyed most of the town in 1910, but it rebuilt quickly and began to grow in popularity thanks to its strong economy. In 1971, the town became an incorporated municipality.
