Willmar is a small town in Minnesota, located on the border of Wisconsin and Illinois. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chippewa Falls, MN Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Willmar were French fur traders in 1729. The first settler in the town was John Aiken, who arrived in 1834. The town was named for Colonel Isaac Wilmar, a United States Congressman from Minnesota Territory (now Dakota County) who served as military governor of Dakota Territory during its creation in 1858-59. In 1865, the local post office was renamed Willmar after Captain Cornelius Fenton Willmar III, captain of USS "Pioneer" during World War II and a member of the U.S. National Museum Board of Directors from 1945-1957. During World War II, Willmar became known as one of four landing sites for troops assigned to support Operation Overlord; it also housed an American Theater Headquarters (ATHHQ). In 1948, skirmishes between Native Americans and white settlers followed another mass migration to the area following gold discoveries at Watervliet and Falcon Creek mines nearby. In 1951 Mankato opened its own airport which led to increased travel within the community by locals and outside visitors alike; this growth has continued over time with only modest reductions in bus service or other transportation options available when compared to neighboring communities east of Interstate 95 such as Mankato or Fargo.. A large fire destroyed most buildings on Main Street on Christmas Day 1906; only five houses remained standing after a $5 million price tag for rebuilds quickly ensued amidst national publicity given by then-Governor George Sibley Wickersham soundly defeated by Republican James Gadsden one year later.. The original post office building burned down again on December 3rd 1955 but despite extensive damage ($2 million dollars) it reopened two weeks later with new glass windows that remain today.. In 1957 voters approved a referendum making Willmar an incorporated city limits by adding an adjacent unincorporated community name – Hennepin – effective January 1st 1958.. This change made it possible for businesses within City limits rather than having their taxes assessed separately outside City limits which had been common until then.. As partof annexation efforts Hennepin also annexed parts of neighbouring Rice Lake Township including portions adjoining Bad Axe Township which lies just east of Hennepin Avenue off US Highway 20 about 15 miles northwest from downtown Willmar proper

The town began to grow rapidly after oil production began nearby in 1909 and construction of a pipeline brought new residents and businesses to the area. By 1930, Willmar had reached its peak with a population of 3,500 people; however, the economy declined during World War II and the war caused some lost jobs and housing developments to be built near military bases across Hennepin County. The population decreased again after the war as people left for various reasons; however, it has slowly increased since 1990 when there were 1,863 residents in Willmar according to the 2010 census
In 1851, a group of men from Willmar, Minnesota started the first flour mill in that area. The mill was built on the banks of the Mississippi River and it functioned until 1862. In 1864, the mill was destroyed by a fire.
