The history of the United States Air Force (USAF) begins with World War I. The USAAF was formed on August 24, 1915 when President Woodrow Wilson established the National Military Service Board to provide for military service by citizens of the United States. The first unit to be activated was the Aero Club of America on October 1, 1915. On December 9th, 1916, General John J. Pershing organized and led a squadron of Wright brothers- flyer pilots in an attempt to break the British air superiority over Europe. After successful flights in early 1917, Pershing led American forces into battle in France as Commanding General of American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). In 1919, Congress created a separate USAF organization known as the Air Corps. The Air Corps initially served as an auxiliary arm of the Army and Navy; however, this arrangement changed with the entry into World War II. During WWII, both services operated combat aircraft but USAF fighters were numerically Superior to those fielded by their counterparts in other theaters including Japan and Germany. In 1945, after Japan's surrender and without any Allied victory within sight or grasp, USAF fighter units patrolled Japanese-held airspace until they were withdrawn from that country at peace treaty ending World War II. The postwar years saw many changes for USAF personnel and aircraft which included major advances in technology such as jet aviation followed by space exploration during Cold War times ! Willmar is a small town in the state of Minnesota. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is adjacent to Bloomington, Indiana. Willmar was founded in 1856 by Danish immigrants, who named it after their ship, "Willmar" which had made landfall on Lake Superior that year. The first school in Willmar was built in 1857 and classes were held from May until September because of the harsh winters. In 1872, the first post office was established and mail service began between Willmar and Minneapolis. The city became a county seat in 1902 and within it were two other towns: West Side (now Robbinsdale) and East Side (now Plymouth). On January 1st, 1912, Willmar became a city with a population of over 100 people due to its annexation by Minneapolis. On December 15th of that year, the last ferry left for Duluth while still using horse-drawn cars due to an increase in automobile usage prompting the city to replace all ferries with buses starting on April 1st 1913. On November 3rd 1914 when World War I began Canby Air Base opened making air travel possible for millions more Americans than ever before giving rise to new businesses such as aviation manufacturing companies like Boeing & Piper Aircraft Co., among others. The Aviation industry would continue growing throughout World War II as aircraft production increased manifold leading eventually to willmar becoming one of just 10 cities worldwide certified as “Airport City” by Airport Magazine back in 1961! After WWI ended there were few job opportunities available so many farmers decided to move away from Cities looking for greener pastures however many residents stayed because they loved their community’s diversity including strong German/Swedish communities presence through churches and schools as well as unique cultural experiences unique enough for tourists! Today there are numerous restaurants, bars and retailers providing much needed economic activity now that willmars downtown core is full again each day during peak tourist season!
