It soon became apparent that this type of operation could not operate indefinitely, so Lisa and Rick started a second small batch coffee shop, The Java House, in 1978. The Java House quickly became known for their delicious cups of coffee each morning. They also were able to offer a wide variety of baked goods and other items related to coffee. This success led to the establishment of the Black & Blue Coffee Emporium in 1984, which became one of White Bear Lake's most popular businesses. The store continued to be successful until 2006 when it closed its doors due to financial troubles. Today, there are several small batch coffee shops located throughout WhiteBearLake County, including The Java House on Main Street and Black & Blue Coffee Emporium on North Avenue. These businesses continue to serve up delicious cups of coffee each morning while providing a wide variety of other products related to caffeine addiction!

The lake was first mentioned in 1846 when merchants on the Minnesota side of the river named it after a white bear that had been killed by hunters. The name stuck and the lake was known as White Bear Lake until 1942 when it was renamed to its current name, White Bear River. The history of White Bear Lake goes back to long before white men ever visited the area. The first humans to live in what is now White Bear Lake were the Hennepin tribe. They built their homes around what is now called Point One Campground and hunted game there. In 1827, Danish traders came across this area and began trading with the Hennepin tribe. This led to development of relationships between these groups and made possible trade goods such as horses, fur coats, food, and firearms. In 1862, Ulysses S Grant came through this area on his way to campaign in Dakota Territory. He camped at Point One Campground while supplies were being unloaded from wagons. This event helped create a strong relationship between Ulysses S Grant and the Hennepin tribe which would continue until 1886 when Indian Removal Act forced them out of their land east of here.
