The town was incorporated on November 3, 1917 and the first unit of the National Guard was activated that year. The first commander of the National Guard in White Bear Lake was Capt. Basil Hickey. In 1927, a new armory and barracks were built in White Bear Lake and the National Guard became a full-time force. In 1933, Captain John Sibelius became commandant of the National Guard in White Bear Lake. He served until his death in 1945. From 1945 to 1951, Captain Harry Kapp led the unit as Commandant until he also died at age 64 on October 5th, 1951. Lt Colonel Frank Auerbach took over as Commandant from Lt Colonel Kapp and held that position until he retired on January 1st, 1973. Majestic Army Air Base located within WhiteBearLake served as home to both the American military forces stationed there during World War II and later during the Cold War era; it closed its doors after finally being absorbed into North Dakota's Air Force base upon its closure by North Dakota in 1992 On September 15th, 2006, President George W Bush signed legislation establishing Iowa's national guard detachment at Fort Dodge State Park near Council Bluffs Iowa On April 24th 2009 Majestic Army Air Base (AACB) finally closed its doors after serving for more than 50 years as an important hub for airlift operations throughout much of central Minnesota

The town of White Bear was established around this time and it eventually became the capital of the new state of Minnesota. The town moved to its current location in 1859.
