As coffee began to spread throughout the United States in the 1800s, it was inevitable that some would set up shop near where people lived and worked. One such coffee house was The Coffee House on West Seventh Street in St. Paul, Minnesota. This coffee house served as a meeting spot for businessmen and politicians alike, and it is said that one of the first calls for orders at this business came from Ulysses S. Grant when he visited the city in 1853. The Coffee House continued to serve delicious cup of Joe until it closed its doors in 1928. In its time, The Coffee House had an impressive impact on the community and has been mentioned by many iconic figures in St. Paul’s history including Mayor John Ahern and Congressman Dave Koehler. The first espresso shop in West St. Paul was founded in the early 1800s by Grosse Pointe Farms founders John Jacob Astor and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Applegate. The original espresso machine used vacuum sealed beans that were roasted on site. In the 1920s, Angelo's Coffee moved from Minneapolis to West St. Paul and became one of the city's most popular coffeees with its delicious Italian roast and creative décor. In the 1970s, Angelo's opened a second location in downtown St.Paul which served up unique coffee drinks such as Margaritas and Pina Coladas while also featuring a large grocery store next door. West St. Paul, Minnesota is a city located in the U.S. state ofMinnesota. The population was 568 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Minnesota by population and fourth-largest in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The City of West St. Paul was incorporated on September 15, 1858, and became a municipality on October 1, 1859. The history of West St.Paul goes back to 1855 when East Mankato Township was organized as part of what would become Dakota Territory after United States victory in the Mexican–American War (1848). On January 17, 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Dakota Territory was divided into two parts - Montana Territory west of Red River and Dakota Territory east of Red River - and East Mankato Township became part of Dakota Territory under territorial governor George Armstrong Custer.[2] In 1862 Dakota Territorial Legislature enacted laws creating townships within territorial limits: North Star township on east bank of river between White Earth Bayou & Big Sioux Lake; South Star township near present day Southdale Mall; Swedish Flatts township southwesterly along Big Sioux Lake border; and Deer Lodge township due north on White Earth Bayou border just inside present day Park Rapids area (the western edge today's Hibbing).[3][4] In 1865 Union General John Aiken captured Fort Snelling from Confederate forces commanded by Major General Don Carlos Manuel de Lemnos y Duran[5][6], thus opening up passage for goods necessary forMN troops sent northward to fight against Abraham Lincoln's re-election campaign as President in November 1865[7]. For years afterward this event would be commemorated annually by erecting an 8 foot high granite monument at fort where cannons once stood,[8] now known as "Aiken's Hill". The history of artisan coffee is a long and winding one. There are different types of coffee that have been made throughout the years, but the origins of this type of coffee are most likely to be traced back to the Middle East. Coffee was first brewed in Baghdad in the 6th century A.D., and it is said that Arab traders brought the bean overland from Arabia to Iraq. The beans were then roasted and ground in small, family-owned businesses before being sold wholesale or to larger breweries. Coffee began to gain popularity in Europe during the 18th century, when Europeans began traveling to Africa and Asia for Trade purposes. These trips led to new markets for coffee and its various derivatives like cocoa powder, tea, sugar cane, etc. Coffee cultivation spread rapidly across Europe during this time period, as growers discovered how profitable it could be to produce this type of crop on a large scale. During the early 19th century, coffee beans became popular among French nobility because they enjoyed its flavor profile more than other European drinks like wine or whiskey. This preference helped make French café society much more sophisticated than those found in other parts of Europe at this time. As coffee became more popular throughout Europe, so too did its price tags; however, purity still remained a top priority for many roasters during this time period. Eventually innovations in transportation allowed brewers greater access to global markets for their products; as a result, better quality beans started appearing on store shelves around the world starting in the early 20th century. By World War I Standards (1914-1945), artisanal coffees had reached an advanced stage where some brands even offered experimental blends unique unto themselves such as Sumatra Sulawesi Dark Roast from Indonesia or Guatemalan Robusto from Central America - both premiums priced at $5 per pound! However, due largely to World War II rationing measures which impacted all aspects of food production including coffee production – these premium prices gradually decreased until they eventually disappeared altogether by the middle of the 21st century! The city of West St. Paul, Minnesota is located in the extreme northwest corner of the United States and was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1855. The city grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its location at the crossroads of several important transportation routes. Today, West St. Paul remains a vibrant cultural and economic center, home to a number of major businesses and cultural attractions. The city also boasts a rich history that has been touched by many events and people. In 1855, Norwegian immigrants arrived in what is now West St. Paul from Norway with the hope of finding work on new farms or becoming part of American society. Most of these pioneers were farmers who had fled religious persecution in their homeland. The town's name reflect this original intention: "West" because it lay west of Minneapolis (the original capital). The first settler in what would become West St.Paul was Ole Liebert, who purchased land near present-day Bloomington in 1856 for $1 per acre ($10 million today). In 1870, Liebert sold his land to John Auldridge for $3 per acre ($40 million today). Auldridge built two sawmills and four tanneries within three years of founding his new town. He also constructed a few homes and began trading goods with neighboring townships
West St. Paul was founded in 1851 as a town on the west bank of the Mississippi River. The first store in West St. Paul was built by John Hennepin, Sr., and his son John Hennepin, Jr. It is said that the father had towing service brought goods from Minneapolis to his small town and he would then carry them back on his horseback to sell at the local mercantile store. The original African-American shopkeeper in West St.Paul was Elijah White who operated out of a house on First Street between Washington and Winnetka Avenues until 1875 when he moved to east side of Nicollet Avenue. In 1865, William Prentice opened a grocery store at what is now 4th and Lyndale Streets, which later became known as Prentice's Place. A blacksmith shop was also located on this block before it became part of West St. Paul's white commercial district during the late 1800s and early 1900s
