The Waconia Air Force Base was the home of the Minnesota Air National Guard from 1941 until its closure in 1992. The base was also used as a training and storage facility for the United States military during World War II. The airbase was reopened in 1991 as an airforce installation and currently serves as a hub for the Minnesotan Air National Guard's operations. The history of the Waconia Air Force Base can be traced back to World War I when it was established as a flying school at Whatcom Army Field. In 1941, the base became part of the United States Army and served as an active headquarters for strategic bombing campaigns against Japan. After World War II, Waconia AFB became known as a training ground and storage center for American forces stationed in Europe. In 1992, after years of neglect, the airbase closed citing budget cuts caused by recessionary times. However, since then, many different organizations have taken over running aspects of the facility including civilian flight instruction programs, fly-ins for local Fourth of July events, and military operating units such as bombers and helicopters. Currently, portions of Waconia AFB are being used once again by members of both the US military and Minnesotan air national guard to provide educational opportunities to young people interested in aviation or emergency response services.
The Air Force has a rich history that goes back to World War I. In 1918, the United States entered World War I as an ally of Great Britain and France. America’s entry into the war changed the course of events, and it became clear that airpower would be a key player in the conflict. The USAAF was created on December 12, 1918, in order to provide air support for ground forces during the war. By late 1918, American forces had successfully halted enemy advances in southern France and Belgium. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation creating the RFC (Royal Flying Corps). The RFC was tasked with providing resources and training to pilots in order to maintain Allied air superiority over Germany. The RAF – which was formed just two years later – would become one of Europe’s most powerful aviation organizations. During the 1920s and 1930s, America underwent a series of military expansions that led to new aircraft programs such as Project Airdocke and Boeing 707 jetliners. In 1938, America entered World War II without any allied nations present on its side; this decision helped lead to strategic bombing by Nazi Germany which crippled much of Europe. The Air Force played an important role in supporting both American troops fighting onthe front lines as well as Bomber Command’s attacks against German targets across European cities. After WWII ended, the Air Force transitioned from piston-powered planes into jets which allowed for more precision attacks against enemy targets using highly advanced technologies including GPS guidance systems and image processing algorithms

The city was founded in 1876 and incorporated as a town in 1907. Waconia is named for John A. Waconia, who donated land to the town and served as its first mayor. As of the census of 2000, there were 6,927 people, 2,754 households, and 1,992 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,514 people per square mile (521/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2% of the population. There are 2754 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58% were married couples living together,[4] 11% had a female householder with no husband present,[5] and 24% were non-families.[6] 24%] Of all households 28%, contained someone living alone who was 65 years old or older . Out of these 38%, only 20%.

Waconia is located in the far southwestern corner of the state on Hibbing's east-west border and is bordered by Clearwater on the north, Maple Grove to the east, and Wanaminga to the south. Waconia was founded in 1854 as a post office named Hibbing. The town was renamed Waconia in 1892 after Minneapolis mayor John A. Macdonald donated land for a town site; part of what is now Hibbing Boulevard was once Macdonald's property. In 1916, when Hibbing became an independent municipality, it adopted its current name and incorporated as a village. The Waconia area was first settled by Menominee Indians in the late 1800s. The first white person to arrive in the area was James H. McCormick, who purchased land from the Menominee in 1902. McCormick built a log cabin and named it Hennepin County Station. In 1907, J.H. McCormick & Son founded the Minneapolis-Waconia Railroad, which served as a transportation artery between Minneapolis and Waconia for many years. In 1928, the Waconia Area School District was founded and remains headquartered here today.
