The Minnesota National Guard has been in existence since 1862. The guard was originally called the "Second Regiment of Minneapolis Volunteer Militia." In 1917, it was renamed the "National Guard ofMinnesota." The National Guard is a federally funded agency that provides law enforcement and military support to state and local governments. It also provides education, training, and counseling for soldiers and police officers. In Vadnais Heights, there are several monuments to members of the Minnesota National Guard who have served or died in the state. One monument is located at State Highway 66th Street and Valley Road. This monument honors two members of the guard: Sergeant First Class John W. Gorski (1927-2007) and Warrant Officer Second Class Earle Hanks (1924-2006). Sergeant Gorski was killed in action on May 1st, 1967 while fighting in Vietnam War. Warrant Officer Hanks was killed on November 18th, 2006 while serving with the Minnesota National Guard during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Another monument located in Vadnais Heights commemorates Guardsmen from neighboring states who have served in Minnesota during World War II. The community of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota is located in the southern portion of Ramsey County and includes the towns of Forest Lake and Nixa. It was named for General James Barron Vadnais, a Union general during the American Civil War. The population of Vadnais Heights was 4,650 as of the 2010 census. The community began to form around 1871 when three families from nearby Forest Lake moved to what is now Vadnais Heights. The first post office in the community was established in 1878. In 1902, the town laid out its own streets and built its first school. In 1928, General Electric built a factory in Nixa which led to an increase in business activity in Vadnais Heights. This growth continued until 1977 when GE announced that it would be moving its operations to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. At this time, there were only a few businesses left in Vadnais Heights and most of the homes had been replaced by stores or buildings used for storage or housing. However, over time new businesses have started up and continue to operate today including two restaurants (Glyde’s Gourmet Diner & Grille and Aqua Grill), four banks (First United Bank, Regions Bank, Mid-America Banking Corporation and Summit Bank), two health care clinics (Southeast HealthCare Partners – Medical Clinic #1 & Southeast HealthCare Partners – Medical Clinic #2), two bars (Brewster’s Bar & Grill & Golden Corral) as well as several residential structures such as a house on State Highway 6 South which has been used as apartments since 1978. Vadnais Heights has seen some redevelopment over the years with plans being submitted for a new high school which never came to fruition; however residents are always looking forward to hearing about any upcoming projects that may affect their community.

The Vadnais Heights community was located in what is now Minneapolis, Minnesota, on the eastern edge of the City of Minneapolis. The original settlers were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1858. By 1871, the community had a population of around 100 people. When streetcar lines were built through Minneapolis in the 1870s and 1880s, Vadnais Heights became an important stop for passengers traveling to and from downtown Minneapolis. In 1892, when railroads began to be built through town, Vadnais Heights residents petitioned for their own railway station. The request was approved and the station opened named after them – Vadnais Heights Railway Station. Even though it served as a commercial center during its time, Vadnais Heights gradually lost its importance as a community until World War II when it again regained some importance due to the influx of refugees into nearby Minneapolis. After the war, however, Vadnais Heights experienced another decline until it finally disappeared entirely in the late 1990s when developers demolished most of the old buildings and replaced them with new ones. Today, there are few reminder of what happened here during its heyday such as the now-demolished train station or street namesakes like Maple Street or Hillcrest Drive which still remain today despite being long gone from their original location. Despite this lack of evidence thatVadnais Heights ever really went away completely (or at least slowly declined over time), it has been widely accepted by locals as if it did actually go away – probably because no other community in central MN quite matches its unique history and culture.
