In 1892, a group of farmers in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota founded the first gourmet coffee company. The founders were John and Jane Moffat. The company produced only straight-up coffee, without added chemicals or flavors. In 1926, the company was sold to French Coffee Company which renamed it Gourmandise Coffee Company. In 1951, Gourmandise Coffee Company merged with Dutch Bros Coffee to form Dutch Bros/Gourmandise Coffee Corporation. In 1978, Dutch Bros/Gourmandise closed its doors and all remaining assets were donated to the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Business Administration.

In 1984, Starbucks began selling its own brand of gourmet coffee called Seattle Coffee Company (SCC). This unique blend of Arabica beans from Indonesia and Mexico was made with quality control procedures that separate the finest Arabica beans from other grinds used in Starbucks coffee products.
Vadnais Heights is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 14,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name means "vale of the vultures". Vadnais Heights is located on the east side of Stroudsburg Road and it borders Maplewood to the south and east and Burnsville to the north. The first European settlers in what is now Vadnais Heights were French fur traders who came overland from Quebec in 1665/66. They named their land la Hache (the Axe) because they found many deer thereabouts which were then hunted by Native Americans for meat or hides. In 1758 Pierre Laclède built a log cabin on an old trading post near present day Lamberton Avenue and North Spring Street. Laclède's cabin became known as Fort La Hache after he captured two white men who had been scouting his territory for trade goods.# In 1849 Isaac Aspinwall arrived from Illinois with his family and started farming at what is now South Park Drive and 20th Avenue N in what was then called Westdale Township # He named his farm Aspinwall's Mills after Isaac Aspinwall, one of his older brothers who had come overland from New England with Stephen Colbert Sr., later Ulysses S Grant’s father-in-law.# In 1868 David Noble bought 2,000 acres (10 km²) of land west of town from John Aiken that included much of today's Vadnais Heights # Noble renamed his tract Iron Range because ore had been found there earlier that year # In 1875 Julius Carlson bought 3,000 acres (10 km²) northeast of town from David Noble for $15 per acre (# This tract became part of Minneapolis). Carlson laid out streets gridiron fashion within his Purchase but changed them to straight lines when he got married having learned about US rural life during this time period.. On July 11th 1880 Nellie Olsen married Ole Olson at Holy Cross Church in Vadnais Heights# After serving as First Vice President & Secretary @ Northern Pacific Railway until its sale to Sam Houston Railroad in 1907, Olsen moved her home across country to Dallas TX where she died on January 10th 1912 aged 92 years old
The Vadnais Heights community was founded in 1885. The name derives from the Vadnais River, which flows through the community. The first inhabitants of the area were farmers and their families. In 1892, a group of businessmen formed the Vadnais Heights Improvement Company to develop land in the community. In 1924, a new post office was established in the community and it continued to serve as its primary facility until 1971. In 1925, a school was built in the community and it continues to serve as its primary facility today.
