The first coffee shop in Stillwater, Minnesota was opened in 1912 by Dutch immigrants. The first coffee beans were roasted in the back of the shop. By 1916, the business had grown to include a café and two roasters. In 1978, Stillwater became the first city in Minnesota to approve a zoning ordinance that allowed for commercial development within blocks of public schools. This led to the opening of several new businesses throughout town, including Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. In 2006, Stillwater-based Blue Bottle Coffee became one of the first cafes in North America to sell whole bean coffee from farm to table. In 2011, Starbucks announced it would close its doors inStillwater after more than 20 years on Main Street. However, Blue Bottle Coffee continues to operate as a independent store until it is purchased by another company or demolished. Today there are over 60 coffee shops located throughout the Twin Cities region, with many more planned or under construction. There are multiple types of coffee available at each shop and often different flavors for each patron's preference. Stillwater is a small town in the counties of Ramsey and Lyon, Minnesota. The population was 792 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Stillwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1869 by Norwegian immigrants who had come to Minnesota from their home country during the gold Rush era. They named their new settlement Stillwater after a still in a nearby spring that they thought would be attractive to travelers on their way to see other parts of the state. The first post office located in Stillwater was established in 1870. The community grew rapidly during the early days of its existence, thanks to its location close to major transportation hubs and its easy access to water supplies. By 1890, Stillwater had become one of the most populous settlements in Ramsey County, with a population of 1,500 residents. In 1916, Stillwater annexed adjoining townships for which it had paid $2 per acre ($36 total). This annexation created what is now known as the Stillwater Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). In 1969,Stillwater became an incorporated municipality when it voted to add charter members rather than accepting annexation requests from neighboring townships. In the 16th century, Italian traders discovered Java and began trading with the local people. They brought coffee back to Europe where it became popularized as a drink for courtiers and nobility. The Dutch East India Company started shipping beans to Amsterdam in the 17th century, which increased the demand for coffee in Europe. The Dutch also developed plantations of coffee in different parts of Indonesia and Africa. However, because of its bitter taste, coffee wasn’t very popular in many places until after World War II when it became more widely accepted as a beverage. In 1954, Starbucks Corporation opened its first store in Seattle, Washington. This made Starbucks one of the largest caffeine companies on earth and set the stage for future growth opportunities for this company.

In 2018, Stillwater was selected by Twin Cities Business magazine as one of America’s “Best Places To Work” for large companies with over 1,000 employees.
