Stillwater, Minnesota is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Marquette County municipality. The name " Stillwater" comes from the Potawatomi word swea-waht-doh or " watercourse". The first settler in what is now Stillwater was John Sinclair, who founded a log cabin on the banks of the Wabasha River in 1837. stillwatermn.com reports that there are no records of any other early settlers in this area and it likely only received its name from Sinclair's Cabin. Today, Stillwater is a small community with a rich history dating back to when it was one of several settlements along the Wabasha River hearing complaints about an annual flow of water that caused great destruction downstream due to heavy rains. In 1857, three men were elected to represent Marquette County on the Territorial Legislature which met at Fort Snelling and decided upon land claims for present day Marquette and Isanti Counties. Following their arrival, they began survey work and soon realized that they had landed on some excellent lands near present day Stillwater - including two parcels of land where they built their first house (now known as House #1). One year later they sold their interest in House #1 to Elisha Chappell for $10 dollars - marking also the first time anyone ever bought property here! In 1865, commissioners from Ottawa County arrived here seeking donations for construction of a new county courthouse - which would later become downtown Minneapolis. The citizens donated many items such as wagon wheels and nails needed for construction; however, all but one wagon wheel got brought back home empty! One evening during dinner celebration hosted by Mrs. Neely after making her donation she remarked how nice it must have been to bring back just one piece of furniture - an old bed! It took four years before Ottawa County finally finished building its courthouse (now known as State Capitol Building), but when it did everyone came together once again to celebrate with refreshments provided by Mrs: Neely herself! In 1871 another group came looking for land west of Sioux City – this time led by JB Curry – when he discovered his discovery while driving overland through Minnesota Territory on his way upriver to Hastings Lake Area Mines prospecting expedition; he named his tractstillwatersettlement after himself!
