Stillwater is a town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the Missouri River. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The site where Stillwater now stands was first settled by Native Americans in 1837 as part of what would become Dakota Territory under President James K. Polk's executive order creating the new United States territory of Dakota and Northeastern Manitoba (now North Dakota). The name " Stillwater" comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "place without water." In 1851, stillwatersupplies were brought to this area by men working for Hennepin County Navigation Company, which extended its line upriver from Walker Landing to present day Stillwater. In 1865, when Minnesota became a state, Stillwater was incorporated as a village and named for Captain John Dickeystillwater who had served with distinction in both Mexican American War and American Civil War campaigns on the frontier of what is now Minnesota. As early as 1870s there were reports that gold Mines existed near what is now Stillwater but no one developed them until 1888 when Isaac Nourse discovered gold ore at Placer Butte just south of town along his ranch road known today as Nourse Boulevard (). Nourse soon after sold his claim to J P Neuman who started mining operations which produced over $1 million in cash and goods alone between 1889-1910 according to company records (). In 1912, Neuman donated land adjacent to his mine to build a small community calledStillwater Rapids which quickly grew into one of the largest concentration camps in America during World War I with over 4,000 inmates living there () After being liberated by United States forces following World War II (), most residents returned home except for a few dozen soldiers and their families who remained on site until it closed in 1957 (). In 1955 Prairie View A&M University began offering tuition free to all Minnesotans through its parent organization Great Lakes Education Association (). Today stillwatersouthwest high school offers classes from 9am - 12pm Monday thru Friday along with agriculture classes starting at 9am on Saturday morning
Stillwater was founded in 1854 by John and Julia Stillwagon. The town was originally named "Winnipeg" after the city in Canada, but it became popular to call it Stillwater because of its natural resources. The site where the town now stands was first called "Ned's Crossing" after a settler who died in a wagon accident there. In 1871, during Minnesota Territory government reorganization, the new county of Polk was created from parts of Dakota and Iowa counties. Because Ned's Crossing lay within Polk County, the name change didn't affect the town's official status. In 1895, Stillwater annexed the adjoining settlement of White Earth.
