In 1916, Stillwater's first post office was established and within a year, the town had a military detachment. The 1st Battalion, 5th RegimentMinnesota National Guard was stationed in town from 1917-1920. The following year saw the establishment of the United States Air Force as an independent branch of the military. The 1st Lt. Colored Troop (1st/5th Cavalry) remained stationed in town until 1951 when they were transferred to nearby Duluth. The remaining detachment of the Minnesota National Guard disbanded in 1957 and all items associated with their service are now held by the United States Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. Today, Stillwater is home to 4 active duty U.S. Army units: 2nd Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 3rd Brigade Combat Team (Infantry), 4th Brigade Combat Team (armor), and 5th Brigade Combat Team (airborne). Additionally, there are numerous reserve units that make up portions of both active and inactive duty soldier populations throughout this metro area totaling over 155 thousand troops!

Stillwater is known for its agricultural production, which includes wheat, corn, dairy products, haystack eggs, peaches, applesauce, potatoes and milk products.
In 1869, Stillwater was founded by farmers in the area. The local post office was established in 1870, and the first store opened in 1872. In 1876, a small town was organized around the post office. By 1880, the population of Stillwater had reached 100 people. In 1902, a schoolWas established in Stillwater and served students from kindergarten through eighth grade. The school closed in 1968 due to budget cuts. In 1934, a dam was built at Stillwater to provide irrigation for nearby farms. One of the benefits of this project was that it increased water access for residents in the area and helped grow industry nearby. In 1957,Stillwater became a city after being proposed by its mayor and City Council members. The city limits grew until they were expanded to include present-day Maplewood on May 1st 1993 when stillwater annexed parts of Maplewood east of Highway 6 (now part of Bloomington).
