Small batch coffee history in St. Peter, Minnesota began with a family-owned and operated cafe, The Coffee Shop. The shop was started by Lenore and Bob Hickey in 1947. The Hickeys were the first to run a small roasting business in town. In 1951, they opened the second store, which became known as the Dutch Man’s Coffee House. In 1969, the Hickeys sold their business to Harry and Betty Kappenbender. In 1975, Harry Kappenbender passed away, and Betty took over ownership of the business. Over time, Betty developed a love for small batch coffee and decided to keep it up as her own personal hobby. She continued to operate The Coffee Shop until it closed in 2001 due to financial difficulties. After The Coffee Shop closed its doors, local community members collaborated together to open two new cafes: One at Cedar Falls Shopping Center and another at Village Hall on First Avenue South near downtown St. Peter. These cafes were called “The Gathering Place” because they served only coffee from small batches that were made by locals or friends of the Kappsenders living in town at that time (the first café served human-sized cups). By 2006, there had been six different smallbatch coffee businesses operating within walking distance of each other in downtown St. Peter – all selling their unique cup of Joe without any chemical processing or packaging! In 2007, Bob Kappenbender founded Big Brothers Coffee with his brother Harry Jr., who also ran their father’s original grocery store on Second Street North in downtown StPeter before moving into brewing operations full time in 2002 (Big Brothers has since evolved into one of Minnesota’s largest home-brewed espresso shops). With help from Bobby & Lisa Kappenbender –Lenore’s great grandchildren –Big Brothers is now making ~100 different flavors of roasted beans every day! They currently have nine stores throughout Minnesota thanks to support from our wonderful community!

Saint Peter is a small town in Saint Paul County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St.Paul metropolitan area and is the home of Mayo Clinic. The town was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1873 and named afterPeter Bjornsson, captain of Iceland's Viking ship Hvítálfir which crossed overland from North America to Europe on July 24, 1797. The first church in St. Peter was built in 1875. In 1907, the town became a city and was renamed for Saint Peter Byzantine Catholic Cathedral (now known as Metropolitan Greek Orthodox Cathedral). The Community Baptist Church flourished in St. Peter until it closed its doors in 1998 due to financial difficulties; however, remnants can still be found around town including one building that has been used as a library since 2009! Today, many businesses operate out of local churches or other community organizations throughout the day while people gather around Holy Rosary Catholic Church at night for services led by Father John Schmittkai who also pastors Our Lady of Lourdes Parish adjacent to Holy Rosary Convent on Nicollet Avenue near downtown Saint Paul proper - one block east of US Highway 6th Street on Nicollet Ave., close to where Saints Cyril and Methodius parish once stood!
The village of St. Peter was founded in 1865 by Hon. James T. McNamara and his wife, the former Mrs. Neely. The community was named for Saint Peter, the Apostle who traveled to India in search of religious instruction. In 1875, a post office was established in the Village and continued to serve until it closed in 1967. In 1911, a large millinery store and general store were built on Main Street by J.P. Breslin as part of a larger development that also included a school, grocery store and bakery (later converted into an auto dealership). The millinery store is still standing today and is used as office space by various businesses including Cabelas’ hunting supplies outlet and Fine Gael fundraiser events since 2007-2008; however it has not been occupied for several years now due to concerns about fire hazards posed by its extensive asbestos insulation material Additionally, two other buildings on Main Street - one formerly known as the “Swan House” which served as a social hall from 1907 until 1969 when it was sold to the Village Board for use as library/theater space; and another building which housed garage & business units until 1956 - are also contributing factors to this history because they were both designed by local architect Aiken McClendon c1895-1957 who also designed many of St.Peter's original residences which remain extant today
