The United States Army deployed gift history in Minnesota during World War II. The Minnesota National Guard and the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) organizedsoldiers for service in the war, and many soldiers received gifts from their loved ones while serving. The Minnesota Garrison Artillery Regiment was activated in 1942 and served in Europe during the war. One of the regiment's members, Adolphus “Ace” Hennepin, presented a two-horse carriage to his regiment's commander, Major General John L. McCrea Jr., on Valentine's Day 1945. The gift was used to transport artillery pieces across country from field camps to battlefields. Many units of the United States Army were deployed in World War II, including the 6th Infantry Division which deployed to Japan in 1945. In 1851, the first Lutheran church in St. Paul was built. The congregation grew and by 1872 there were six churches in the town. In 1876, the first school in St. Paul was opened and it became a college until 1963 when it merged with Minneapolis State University to become Minnesota State University-Mankato.
