The military has a long and proud history in Saint Michael, Minnesota. The town was founded by Scandinavian settlers in 1851 as an agricultural community on the edge of the woods. By 1915, the city had grown to over 100 residents and was hosting a small army detachment stationed at Fort Snelling. In 1917, the city erected its first public library, one of only three in the area. The fort continued to be used for military purposes until it was decommissioned in 1957. Today, Saint Michael is home to several Army installations including Fort Snelling and Camp Roberts. And although there are no active duty military presence within town limits, there are many private companies that maintain troop bases hereabouts. Their wedding cake - inscribed "With sincere thanksgiving we give this beautiful cake to your Honesty & Colonel James Gurney Mr Houdini" - still stands today on display at the fort museum! 3) On October 13th, 1922 - Veterans Day - local citizens placed wreaths at both sides of Mitchell Street near what is now Parkside Shopping Center after American World War II veteran Red Butchart presented them with his rifle/ammunition case which he had found while driving through townRobertson Air Force Base Museum displays this exhibit about WWII USAAF veterans in Ramsey County

The division was redesignated the 1st Infantry Division on 3 July 1921, and again on 15 October 1947 as part of the United States Army's transformation to an all-volunteer force following World War II. St. Michael, Minnesota is a small town in the far northcentral part of the United States. It lies about forty-five miles ( seventy-five kilometers) northeast of Minneapolis and thirty-six miles (42 kilometers) southeast of Fargo. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. The name comes from Mount St. Michael, which stands just outside the town limits. The first Europeans to visit what is now St. Michael were fur traders in 1818, and they named it after one of their number, Michaël de Saint-Malo. In 1824, a group of French Catholic missionaries arrived here and founded an ecclesiastical district called "the Missions du Nord." They built a church and hospital here in 1827–28 and named it after their patron saint--St. Michael the Archangel! In 1851–52, members of the Minnesota Territorial Legislature decided that this tiny community should be named for America's newest national hero: St. Michael the Archangel! The new name was adopted with great ceremony on April 14th, 1952! Today's town was established as a township on December 5th, 1907; it became an incorporated city on January 1st, 1924! The economy of St. Michael depends largely upon agriculture--more than eighty percent of its gross product comes from crops such as wheat, soybeans, corn, potatoes and cotton! Manufacturing also plays an important role here; some products include aluminum cans and car parts! Almost all residents are Protestant—just over sixty percent are affiliated with either Evangelical or Methodist churches! There is no local school system; most citizens send their children to public schools in Minneapolis or Fargo... but there are private schools in neighboring towns which offer excellent programs for students from poor families!
