The population was 753,228 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth-most populous city in Minnesota and its seventh-largest municipality by land area. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. The site where St. Louis Park now stands was first occupied by Arapaho Indians who were forced from their traditional hunting grounds along the Missouri River in 1837 by General James Kensey's Indian Squadron as part of his attempt to secure control over all of south central Minnesota for United States expansionism during the 1830s and 1840s. The Arapaho were eventually expelled from their lands, but not before they erected a small wooden cabin on what is now Forest Avenue near present day Leslie Street – this structure served as their village hall until 1855 when a larger building was constructed nearby on Whitehead Boulevard (now West End Drive). In 1854, St Louis Park incorporated as a city under the name "Forest City". However, because Forest City had no water supply or sewers and relied primarily onmilk traffic to pay its expenses, it soon became clear that it could not sustain itself without large donations from wealthy residents in downtown Minneapolis who were able to provide such essentials as water trucks and private wells for residents to use with relative ease given that public services were provided only throughMN State Highway 9 which ran parallel to Lake Superior due east of town center). In 1861, an act was passed by Congress annexing St Louis Park into Minneapolis; however, this annexation did not take effect until May 15th 1865 when Mayor John Blythe purchased title to all land east of Main Street including Forest City from Henry Messeliger for $2 per acre (a total purchase price of $52,000).
