The Marines who serve in St. Louis Park, Minnesota are a part of the United States Marine Corps. The unit was originally called the First Battalion, Fifth Marines, and was activated on November 1st 1942 at Naval Air Station Peleliu in Palmyra, Tennessee as part of World War II. The battalion served with distinction during the war and returned home to St. Louis Park on December 15th 1945. After the war, the battalion was redesignated as Company A, First Marine Division (on May 25th 1951).On September 26th 1969 Company A deployed to Vietnam where they fought off enemy attacks for 3 months before returning home on October 16th. On January 17th 1972 Company A again deployed to Vietnam where they participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm which lasted from March to April of that year. As a result of their service in Vietnam, Company A earned two Presidential Unit Citations (PUCs). In addition to their military decorations and awards, company members have also received numerous civilian awards including: The Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), The Purple Heart (PH), The Bronze Star Medal (BSM) and many other honors.Today the Marines who serve in St.Louis Park are still fighting for our country- both inside and outside of Iraq and Afghanistan-.
