Gourmet Coffee is a long history in the St. Louis Park area. It all started with George Peabody, who founded Peabody Coffee on November 5th, 1916 in Minneapolis. He was the first coffee shop in Minnesota and he started out making Turkish coffee. In 1924, Peabody opened his first store in St. Paul and soon after began selling café-quality coffee to customers all over the Twin Cities area. In 1951, he moved his company to what is now called Peabody's Place on Nicollet Street in downtown St. Louis Park. The company continued to grow and became one of the largest specialty coffee companies in the Midwest. Today, Gourmet Coffee employs more than 170 people across five stores and online retail presence worldwide including two Canadian locations.

These companies have had a large impact on the coffee industry as well as society in general. The first coffee plants were established in Java in 1521 by an Italian trader, Giovanni della Valle. Coffee was not exported until after Dutch traders discovered Indonesia in 1602. Until then, it was mainly used for medicinal purposes. The Dutch introduced roasted beans to Europe in 1624 and became the leading importer of Indonesian coffee. roasting beans took place at different degrees of heat, which resulted in distinctive flavors and aroma profiles for each bean. Starbucks began as a small cafe near Seattle’s University District in 1971. It started out serving cold drinks such as milk shakes and fruit smoothies from vending machines located on campus. In 1978, Starbucks opened its first store outside of Seattle when it moved to Portland, Oregon. In 1984, Starbucks joined forces with Peet's Coffee & Tea to form the world’s first ever gift-wrapped espresso drink called Starbuck’s Firsttea (later renamed simply Starbuck). At this time, Starbucks also bought out Peet’s parent company Tandem Coffee Incorporated for $2 million dollars In 1990,starbucks merged its two fastest growing divisions - tea and coffees into one division named Teavana In 1997 Starbucks discontinued their caffeine-free implosion program known as “ Milkshake Madness ” In 2000 they announced they would begin sourcing only organic fair trade beans from Guatemala City In 2003 they entered into a joint venture with Dutch brewer Koffie Klokkenroerij to produce dark roast Sumatra Arabica coffee beans under the name 'The Broad Mill'. This partnership led to increased sales growth for both companies
The history of gourmet coffee begins with the first roasting of whole bean coffee in Europe. The two original European roasters were Flanders and Roquefort, both located in Belgium. In the late 1800s, Dutch traders started importing whole beans from Java to Amsterdam, where they began to sell them as a specialty commodity. At this time, coffee was still considered an agricultural product, and there wasn't much focus on it as a beverage. However, because of its rarity and high quality, early Europeans began drinking coffee as a status symbol.
In 1881, the City of St. Louis Park was organized as a town in Minnesota. The city had been founded by General James Wilkinson in 1851 and was named for the ancient Roman city of Rome. The people of St. Louis Park were farming farmers who had to contend with harsh weather conditions, Indian raids, and other challenges during their early years. The first school in St.Louis Park opened in 1872 and classes were conducted on a farmhouse until 1895 when an ad In the Minneapolis Tribune announced that a new school building would be constructed at Seventh Street and Hennepin Avenue. The construction began in 1897 and the first students arrived that fall. The school was built using wood from local forests which made it very sturdy and lasted through multiple expansions over time; it is still in use today! In 1907, the City of Saint Paul annexed Saint Louis Park and became its own municipality with its own police force. This move saved the City of Minneapolis money sinceSaint Paul paid for all infrastructure improvements associated with having its own municipality such as water mains, streetlights, sewers, etc.–all while continuing to provide service to SaintLouis Park residents! The growth of SaintPaul led to increased demands for education services withinStLouisPark so in 1915 a high school was established on Lomax Road adjacent to the park headquarters building which remains operational today! In 1916 a middle school followed suit before finally arriving at its current location near East Seventh Street/Hennepin Avenue in 1929! A library was also established withinStLouisPark soon after opening; this facility still operates today as part of University Community Services! A boys’ grammar School (now called “Johns Hopkins High School”)opened adjacent toLomax Road just east of Lomax Road Elementary School shortly after World War II ended!!! So much has changed withinStLouisPark over these many decades but one thing has not changed: our love for our community which we continue to feel is stronger than ever!!
The city of St. Louis Park was founded in 1856 by John S. Wright and James L. Brown, two businessmen from Illinois who decided to found a new town in the area that had been vacated by the now-demolished Fort Snelling. The town quickly grew, and in 1869 it became the county seat of Ramsey County. The growth of St. Louis Park led to an increase in population, which also led to an increased need for land for development. In 1870, the Minnesota Legislature passed a bill authorizing the annexation of what is now St. Louis Park by Minneapolis as part of its expansion into Minnesota; this annexation created demand for more land in St. Louis Park, which resulted in another increase in population and development until 1920 when Minneapolis took over all responsibility forSt. Louis Park’s government and economy once again). Today, St.Louis Park is home to over 21,000 people who live within its boundaries and are significant participants in its local economy including businesses such as Walmart, Nordstrom Rack, Best Buy Co., Target Corporation, KFC World Headquarters (the world’s first fast food restaurant), MLB’s Saint Paul Nationals (a team formerly belonging to the Chicago Cubs) and many others located throughout its core areas: Douglas Heights/Maplewood Heights/Brooklyn Center/Rochester Hills; North Central; Midtown/Downtown; Harrison Heights; South Central; University Heights/West Side; Maplewood Gardens; Forest Glen/Eaton Glen
