The United States Navy has a long history in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The city was named after Rear Admiral George Washington Ramsey, who served as the first U.S. Commodore of the North Atlantic Fleet and Fort Snelling on Lake Superior. In 1854, Ramsey donated land to the City of St. Cloud for its public square. The following year, the first shipbuilding plant in what is now Minneapolis was opened at the old Arsenal Shipbuilding Company site in downtown St. Cloud by Captain John Averill Morrison and his son-in-law, Captain Frederick Wessel Hennepin (1820-1912). This shipyard became one of America's leading builders of warships and merchant ships during the 19th century. In 1869, Rear Admiral John Paine Grant took command of the North Atlantic Fleet and moved his headquarters from Annapolis, Maryland to St. Cloud, becoming the first American Commodore stationed there permanently upon its establishment as an independent navy under President Andrew Johnson's administration in February 1865. One year later, Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter succeeded Grant as commanding officer of the fleet based at Anacortes on Puget Sound Island southeast of Seattle; however Porter left office before he could complete his planned reorganization of naval forces which would have included a squadron at Hampton Roads Naval Station adjacent to Virginia Beach in Virginia Beach County along with two squadrons at Guantanamo Bay Naval Air Station Cuba - both within Cuban territory - effective 1 July 1870; these plans were never realized due to political instability around that time period in America which limited naval activity beyond certain authorized ports only when it suited political considerations instead of military ones as had been envisioned by Commander Porter himself pursuant to Admiralty Order No 2/2 dated 5 October 1869 authorising him "to take all proper measures for carrying into effect His Majesty's proclamation dated 12 September 1870 announcing that…the Custom House at Havana should be destroyed…." However this did not mean that American warships ceased operations outside such authorized ports however they continued principally outfitting Spanish vessels operating against American shipping interests inside America while their own navy operated primarily off shore except for coastal defense duties where detached small detachments patrolled rivers and harbors conducting patrols during high seas periods without any sailing or landing forces other than those embarked on large warships providing cover or escort duty………. The St. Cloud Naval Air Station was established in 1942 as a naval air station within the Defense Department's Western Hemisphere Air Defense Command. The original airplane hangar and training range were built on what is now the St. Cloud Municipal Airport, about 15 miles southwest of downtown St. Cloud. In 1946, the Naval Air Station moved to its current location northwest of downtown and began operations as an operational airbase with Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers. It became a nuclear-related facility in 1949 when the United States detonated its first atomic bomb at Los Alamos. The installation also housed Wright-Patterson AFB's post-World War II bomber squadrons, which flew Lockheed L-749 Constellations until 1958 when they were replaced by North American P-8s. In 1957–58, NAS St Cloud upgraded to McDonnell Douglas DC-10s and started flying Airliners for both military and commercial services worldwide under several names including Northwest Airlines A330 Family and Great Lakes Airlines A332/A340 Family aircraft.. In 1978 NAS St Cloud transitioned from being an operational airbase to becoming an airport with terminals including three runways: one north/south runway with a parallel taxiway serving two parallel hangars; one east/west runway that had been newly constructed adjacent to City Hall; and one used by general aviation on three dirt strips next to Runway 18L/35R which served as a local airport while NASStCloud functioned as an operational airbase providing support for city government activities such as law enforcement, firefighting, public works and municipal functions such as elections or zoning changes etc.. On May 1st 1989 NASStCloud became an International Airport renamed Delta Minnesota International Airport Holdings Incorporated after merging with Minneapolis' Hennepin County Airport Authority who held title to Saint Cloud Municipal Airport from Minnesota State University Moorhead (now Minnesota Northern) . With this merger NASStCloud became part of Minneapolis - Saint Paul metropolitan area . By 2002 Delta had withdrawn all nonstop service from NASStCloud . Since then there have been few attempts at resumed nonstop service but many smaller regional airlines have operated out of STLN through various agreements etc... currently it is just occasional passenger flights by Dakota SkySeat turboprop planes

St. Cloud, Minnesota is a small city in the extreme northwestern corner of Minnesota, United States. Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Superior, it is bordered by the states of Michigan and Wisconsin to the south and east, and by North Dakota to the north. The population was 97,812 at the 2010 census. The city's history dates back to 1854 when it was founded as a tiny trading post on Crow Wing River by fur trappers operating out of what is now Winnipeg. In 1865, St. Cloud became an incorporated town under the name of Duluth; however, Duluth quickly lost its status as a major port for goods moving through Lake Superior due to competition from Thunder Bay and Chicago. In 1870, Duluth merged with neighboring communities in what is now Ford County to form St. Cloud; until 1904, it was known as "Duluth-Stcloud". In 1907, St. Cloud became part of the newly formed state of Minnesota; until 1912 it was still officially designated as just "Duluth". The rapid growth of other northern Minnesotan cities during World War I (1914-1918) led to a decline in business activity at Duluth-Stcloud; however, because much manufacturing took place there before Interstate 94 was built nearby (and after), many Memories still remain from that era including downtown's original clock tower (which can be seen today inside City Hall). From its beginnings as a small trading post on Crow Wing River some 50 years ago through its incorporation into larger municipalities in 1900 and 1910 and finally becoming part of the new state of Minnesota in 1914 - all while experiencing significant economic growth - StCloud has played an essential role inMinnesota's history both large and small.
