Shoreview is a small town located in far western Minnesota. The population of Shoreview was 5,681 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in the County of Morrison,Minnesota and it has a land area of just over one square mile. The name "Shoreview" comes from two sources: one meaning "shore of Manistee" and another meaning "the meadow between Two Hills". In 1854, surveyors named the place after Samuel A. Shore (1795-1864), an immigrant to America who had come from England as a trader with the Danish East India Company. Shoreview was originally part of white settleings around present day Stroudsburg and Battle Creek before becoming a black community in 1907. In 1954, when water supplies to Morrison were cut off by construction on I-494, residents voted to move to what is now Shorewood Township. The township was organized on February 14, 1955. At that time, it consisted of just 1 square mile - all of which is now within the boundaries of the current town of Shorewood. As both towns grew larger they began to share services and annexed more villages until they had both full municipalities status in 1989. As housing values increased along with suburban development nearby, both towns saw their populations decline beginning in the 1990s until they reached their current levels today due largely to commuting patterns established by Hennepin County and other businesses located nearby.

There were also several early businesses in Shoreview such as J & M Girdler's bakery which opened in 1872, Pappas grocery store from 1874-1875 (later part of Kroger), Fidelity Bank from 1886-1892 (later First National Bank), Hennepin County Courthouse from 1895-1901 (later replaced by the current County courthouse), and Aiken Piano Company from 1902-1905. In 1906, the first post office was established inshore at Highland Park; however, it operated out of an old flour mill until 1912 when it moved to its current location on Third Street. The population of Shoreview rapidly grew during the late 19th century thanks to waves of immigrants who arrived seeking better lives. By 1920, there were over 20 family homes scattered throughout downtown; by 1930 there were more than 60 buildings including 12 churches and 11 schools operating within the limits of what is now suburban Minnetonka. Shoreline experienced some setbacks during World War II but managed to remain largely intact as many residents fought for the country side. After the war ended in 1945, most residents decided to move away or integrate into their newly created suburbs rather than maintain a separate community with its own unique history. However, there are still a few reminders that date back to those days such as Pioneer Hall which houses historical exhibits about local pioneers and remains operational today as an educational center for students living in Shoreline Village Corporate Park .
On September 11, 1941, the USS Minnesota collided with the USS New York off the coast of California. The collision resulted in the loss of both ships and 181 lives.
