It served as a small port of call for American warships steaming between the Great Lakes and California. The station was closed on September 9, 1898 following the Spanish-American War. The United States Marine Corps began operations at the Naval Station in Shoreview on October 15, 1912. The Marines were initially employed to protect American citizens traveling through Canada on their way to fight against Spain during World War I. In 1916, shoreside barracks were built to accommodate Marine Corps personnel and equipment during World War II. In 1942, a new airfield was constructed adjacent to the Naval Station at what is now Harbor Road and Northern Boulevard in Shoreview. This airfield became known as Marine Air Base (MAP) North after it was transferred from the Army to the Marines in 1944. A permanent parade ground called “Plymouth Beach” was also developed at MAP North within a few years of its construction. On July 1, 1954, MAP North became USMC Base Camp McCoy when Marine Barracks No 2 and 3 were moved from Mount Pleasant toCamp McCoy along with other military infrastructure that had been stored at Navy Pier since 1918-1918 when Mackinac Island[1] served as an artificial island off of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.[2] On December 12th of that year,[3] Camp McCoy became operational with 1st Battalion (Light Infantry), 5th Marines while Camp McCoy Annex - which housed Headquarters Squadron 8(A)/Intelligence Support Group - became operational on January 17th 1955 shared by both battalions under command of Major General Archibald Haines commanding III Amphibious Force[4][5]. After over five years of preparations and work these two camps would come into full use starting February 15th 1957 when 1/5 Marines disembarked onto Camp McCoy beach after seven days of amphibious assault operations supported by fighter aircraft providing cover for Operation Neptune's Spear naval exercise taking place off southern Alaska[6][7]. USMCBaseCampMcCoy would remain camp headquarters untilactivated Columbus AFB OH on May 6 1959 followed by closure order NAFB 27 Jan 1960 effective same day due to budget cuts which impacted many services across military base system including USMC basecamp McCoy On May 11 1959 Combat Outpost #8(A)/Intelligence Support Group relocated from Fort Snelling MN about 20 miles north east next door [to]Marine Barracks #2 & #3 now located just south side of road leading out front [of map marker], marked "Combat Outpost #8(A)/ISG"
