Shoreview is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 7,411 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and is located on the Mississippi River in south-central Minnesota. Shoreview was founded in 1854 by Abram Davenport and his family as a small town on what is now Cedar Avenue west of Stillwater Street. The first post office opened in 1857, and the first store opened in 1860. In 1865, an act to name the community after General George Washington was passed by Congress and it became known as Shorewood, after Washington's hometown of Alexandria, Virginia. In 1870, a lumber mill was built along Cedar Avenue and soon became one of Shorewood's most important businesses. By 1880, there were six stores and 85 residents living in Shorewood. The mills closed around 1920, but some remnants remain today including an amusement park (now called Water World) and a water tower (now known as Lakeshore Towers). In 1935, when Lake County was created from parts of Dakota Territory, Shorewood became part of it new county seat – becoming one of only two cities within Lake County (the other being Mankato). In 1951, when Shorewood annexed CenterPointe Heights – which lies immediately north of its boundaries – it also become one of only two cities within Lake County with no special privileges or exemption from annexation laws; all otherLake County cities were granted special status based on their population size or economic development potential only (i.e., they did not have to annex any other communities). The city has experienced significant growth over the years both residentialwise (+10% per year since 2000) as well as commercial (+15%). Shoreview is now a suburb of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. Its ZIP code is 55609. The first settlers in what would become Shoreview were farmers who arrived there from Canada in 1851 and 1852. In 1865, the community became known as "The Hub" because it housed more than 100 businesses and served as a center for transportation and commerce within the small rural area around it. In 1904, Shoreview incorporated as a village under the name "Staples". By 1910, however, its population had declined to about 400 people because of prohibition and World War I munitions production that had severed many connections between rural Main Street residents and their downtown businesses. To prevent this From happening again during future wars or Prohibition-era booms/busts (euphemisms for stillbirths), city leaders decided to rename Shoreline Village after Admiral Chester Nimitz, Jr., one of America's most celebrated naval commanders during World War II and later Ulysses S. Grant's Vice Presidential candidate on the 1944 presidential campaign trail." Nimitz' namesake also inspired another naming change in 1954 when town officials decided that they wanted all residents to be able to call themselves by their first name rather than using last names which may have been confusing or difficult for some people to remember over time - something they considered an important aspect of democracy. In 1960, when Stations Bayou opened up beneath Interstate 94 just north of town limits, bringing more jobs and development opportunities directly into town; shoreline residents saw an opportunity to recapture some lost ground from neighboring towns that had not seen such growth since before Prohibition began." In 2002-2003 township trustees voted 3-1 along with then mayor Tom Condon & Planning Director Julie Wecht not only to annex adjoining townships but also create new streetscape features such as sidewalks & streetlights throughout the entire community by means of repaving & resurfacing our very old asphalt roads surface...thus becoming "Shorewood Township"...this was followed by approval from the Board Of Commissioners on November 12th 2003." On January 15th 2004 incorporation papers were filed with Ramsey County stating that Shorewood Township existed prior to November 12th 2003 while Stations Bayou did not technically exist until 2002/2003."
