In the early 1900s, air force deployments were not common. However, in Shoreview, Minnesota a group of citizens decided to make an exception and send a contingent of military personnel on Christmas Eve 1914. This event is known as the "Christmas Air Force Deployment." The gift history of this deployment can be found through various sources, including postcards and newspapers from that time period. The original shipment included 12 volunteer pilots who had served with the Minnesota Volunteer Militia; these men were also given gifts such as food and clothes. They arrived in Duluth on December 24th and were met by local leaders who escorted them to their new base at Camp Grant. From here they flew missions over Duluth and elsewhere in the state providing excitement for those living near Lake Superior. The Christmas Air Force Deployment was different from any other deployment because it involved active duty military personnel from the United States Army's First Infantry Division (later redesignated First Armored Division). At its peak, this division numbered over 1,500 soldiers and officers. It participated in many campaigns during World War I including trench warfare in France and Belgium, but its most famous victory came during the Battle of Belleau Wood which ended German Army morale within days after being fought off decisively. Since its inception, the Christmas Air Force Deployment has been remembered as an event that helped bring joy to many families across Minnesota during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

Shoreview is a village in Cook County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,762 at the 2010 census. Shoreview is located on the east side of the river St. Croix and is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The Village of Shoreview was organized in 1892 as a result of a merger of two smaller villages, Oneida and West Shorewood. The first settlers were Norwegian immigrants who built log cabins on land that now includes parts of what is known as downtown Shoreview. In 1904, voters passed a resolution to name the village after General George Washington shore-leaveer USS Constitution (1827-1829). On July 4th, 1904, General Washington's ship anchored in Sturgeon Bay just downstream from where modern day Shoreview sits. A crowd of civilians and military personnel assembled to watch as President Theodore Roosevelt disembarked his vessel and walked ashore with his family for an picnic lunch at Point Beach before returning upstream to Whitefish Bay aboard USS Constitution II. Shoreview was a small town in the far southeast corner of Minnesota, located on the shore of Lake Superior. The community was founded by farmers in 1858, and flourished until the mid-19th century. Shoreview's decline began during the Panic of 1873, when prices for goods shipped from Europe plummeted due to a series of setbacks in that year's trade war. The town declined further during the 1870s and 1880s as its population dwindled to around 100 residents. However, some new entrepreneurs revived Shoreview during this time, and it experienced a period of growth in the 1890s. By 1900, Shoreview had grown to more than 1,000 residents and was one of the most important settlements on Lake Superior. However, the town's prosperity eventually came to an end after World War I; its population decreased by almost half between 1920 and 1930. In 1945, ShoreVIEW became part of Unitarian Ridge Township following a boundary change within that township. Since then, however, many aspects of ShoreVIEW history have been preserved through various local organizations such as The Historical Society of Shore View (SHV), which publishes an annual journal called "ShoreVIEW Magazine."
The town of Shoreview was founded in 1868 by Rev. Theodore Dwight and his wife, Julia. The first post office was established in 1869. In 1870, the town had a population of only 10 people. By 1875, Shoreview had a population of 50 people and became an incorporated community. In 1880, the town built its first schoolhouse. Shoreview experienced some growth during the early years of the 20th century; it had a population of 150 people by 1910. However, during World War I, Shoreview's population decreased due to military service. The town's population increased again during World War II due to agricultural production in the area. After the war, shorewood began to decline as manufacturing moved away from shoreline towns because of competition from larger cities and suburbs. However, within 25 years after its establishment there were no schools in shorewood other than high school which served single-family homes for most residents
