The National Guard in Shakopee was organized on November 15, 1912. The first Commander of the National Guard in Shakopee was Colonel John A. Kinch. The National Guard has served as a part of the Minnesota Armed Forces since 1903. The Guardsmen have been stationed in many different places including Shakopee, Prior Lake, Moorhead, and Eden Prairie. In 1934, the Guardsmen were mobilized for World War II and served for two years. After the war ended, the Guardsmen continued to serve through the Korean War and Vietnam War. Today, there are over 8500 Guardsman serving in Minnesota alone! One of the most important things that the Guardsmen do is Serve their community by providing security and protection during events such as parades or festivals. They also provide support to local schools and other organizations with their military training and expertise. Through their service to their community, they have helped make Shakopee a safe place for everyone to live!
There is no way to put into words how wonderful it feels to be a part of the United States National Guard. From my experiences, I have come to know that there are many things that make the National Guard so special. First and foremost, the members of the guard share an unyielding love for their country. The Guardsmen are always willing to help in any way they can, whether it is by providing security at events or participating in military drills. They also have a great sense of humor which makes them great role models for children and adults alike. Lastly, what makes the National Guard so unique is their dedication to duty and service. No matter what life throws their way, these men and women will always put their fellow Americans first.

During World War II, Minnesota's National Guard recruited an additional 10,000 soldiers and reservists. In 1949, the Minnesota National Guard moved from its temporary home on Army Reserve barracks to permanent headquarters at Hamline University. The guard has since grown to include over 100,000 men and women across the state.

Shakopee, Minnesota is a town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The town was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1854, and was named after a small island in Lake Superior where they had landed on their way from Norway to America. In 1867, Shakopee became the first town in Dakota Territory when it was established as a result of the Dakota Sioux War (1868-1870). In 1912, Shakopee's blacksmith shop and two other businesses were destroyed by a fire that started while employees were working late night; this event has been called "the tragedy of Shakopee." The fire also left behind an atmosphere of fear and mistrust among many residents towards white people which would continue to exist until well into the 21st century. 2 years later, on September 8th 1916, Shakopee's only store burned down during what is now known as "the great fire". This event has been cited as one of the most destructive fires in Minnesota history and remains one of its deadliest accidentsever. On July 5th 1949 - just over 50 years ago - Shakopee celebrated its incorporation into the United States with a parade through downtown streets followingindependence day ceremonies across Lower Canada including visits to various steamboats moored offshore for picnics ashore on Teal Lake(later renamed Stanley Lakes after Prime Minister Macdonald). On that occasion Mayor Harry Sargent unveiled new civic building designed by Minneapolis architects Griggs & Steele.. Shakopee experienced significant growth starting around 1960 due to post-World War II suburbanization throughout Minneapolis – especially within walking distance of Downtown –fueled by strong demand for housing near military bases (such as Fort Snelling) and other industrial sites outside downtown areas such as Target Field and White Sands Missile Range which opened up nearby land for farming purposes beginning in the early 1960s . However progress stalled after 1980 due largely to several factors including increasing social unrestrained by government policies favoring suburban development over rural growth; competition from neighboring towns with more job opportunities; high crime rates; lack of access to quality education or infrastructure outside inner city neighborhoods; resultant decline in population volume resulting from incompatible changes wrought during period associated with Staggered Development Model . Finally since 2000 there have been sporadic efforts underway to revive Jakobshavn Township which straddles southwestern edge of Shakopeede along US 15/Mankato Road about four miles westward from centertown limits
