The United States Air Force has a rich history in Savage, Minnesota. The air force's first Base was established in the town on October 3, 1947 and operated as an Auxiliary Field Station until it was transferred to the Air Force Academy on May 6, 1953. Air Force Museum of Minnesota presents "Airmen of the USAF 1945-2002" exhibit November 2-5 In honor of Air Force Museum's 50th anniversary, an exhibit entitled "Airmen of the USAF 1945-2002" will be on display at the AFM from November 2-5. This exhibit features pictures and artifacts from throughout AFM's history including Air Forces Europe (AE), Far East Command (FEC), Continental Commands (CONUS), Pacific Ocean Areas (PACOM), and Alaska Aerospace Defense Command (AADC). Savage saw its share of air forces during World War II with two groups active here: 9th Wing which operated from December 1943 to February 1944; and 10th Wing which arrived in early 1945. The 9th Wing flew strategic missions over Japan while the 10th Wing bombed Hiroshima. In total, there were 27 squadrons incorporated into three wings during World War II but only six actually served in combat and all were disbanded after hostilities ended. Savage also saw action in Korea when elements of IX Bomber Command engaged in attacks against North Korean targets from September 15-October 15, 1950; however no strikes took place against Pyongyang because that city had been heavily fortified by Koreans and their allies. As mentioned before, theAFMwas activated at Savageon October 3rd 1947 concurrent with AFB Minneapolis which would later become known as Wright Patterson AFB. Both installations shared a single mission: providing training for enlisted personnel assigned to various operational aircraft stationed overseas or being prepared for operations within our own borders should war occur within our nation or abroad. On October 3rd 1947 both installations' commanders met together at Saginaw Valley Airport where they organized what would ultimately become Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces Europe commands subordinate thereto located at RAF Essen Germany under then Lieutenant General James Byrnes who became Commander Ninth Allied Expeditionary Air Forces on October 16 th 1946 concurrently with HQ Allied Expeditionary Forces Europe activation date . After WWII ended almost all trained military personnel were discharged so it wasn't long before Headquarters English Electric Group left England for America effective January 1st 1951 followed by Headquarters Fifth Army Military District commander who moved his command HQs to Grand Forks ND March 25 th 1951 thenceforth headquarters Eighth Army Gdarmy Medical Brigade headquartered at Eppsiville MN April 20 nd 1951 finally Headquarters Fourth Army Gdarmy Medical Brigade July 1 st 1951 when former SeventhArmyGarrison commander Colonel John Hagen assumed command following Brigadier General Carl Spaatz promotion from Major General August 30 th 1954 . The Savage Air Force Base gift history began on November 1, 1946 with the purchase of a C-47 Flying Fortress by the Minnesota Air National Guard. The plane was used for training and providing support to the Southwest Asia Command. It was donated to the base in 1959 and renamed the TR-3C/4A Skytrain. The base also received an F-117A Nighthawk from Lockheed Martin in 1992.

The town began as a farm village, with only five or six families living there at one time. However, over time, Savage grew into a thriving community with a strong agricultural economy. The town currently has about 100 residents, most of whom are farmers and their families. Savage has been part of Hennepin County since it was formed in 1871. At that time, it was one of the northernmost towns in Minnesota and had no school or hospital facilities available to its citizens. However, thanks to the efforts of local boosters such as Reverend John Sipple (1814-95), Savage soon became an important hub for education within northeastern Hennepin County. In 1902, Savage became home to what is now Minneapolis School District No. 1 when that district was created from parts of neighboring Elk River Township and Faribault Township
