In Sartell, Minnesota, the US Air Force has a long and significant history of gifting. Sartell is a small town in central Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,781 at the 2010 census. It is part of the metropolitan area of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The name Sartell comes from the French word "sarre" meaning furrow or ditch and "-ell" meaning place or settlement. Sartell was first settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1851. The first post office in Sartell was established in 1854. In 1865, the school district was organized and Sartell had its first incorporation as a village on May 5, 1865. By 1870, there were 10 businesses in town and over 100 residents. By 1880, it had an assessed value of $10,000 and a population of 200 people. The oil industry began to develop in Sartell during World War I due to the abundant natural resources available there such as sandstone and coal seams near Fort Snelling; however, production ceased after 1919 because of increased competition from other oil companies operating around that time inMichigan and Texas.
