National Guard gift history in Roseville, Minnesota began with the establishment of the National Guard on February 14, 1862. The purpose of the National Guard was to provide a force for the defense of the United States against future insurrections. For many years, members of the community volunteered their time and resources to help prepare and deploy National Guardsmen to any location needed during times of national emergency. The first unit organized as part of the National Guard in Roseville was Company H, 7th Minnesota Infantry Regiment. This company was recruited from residents living in south Minneapolis and east St Paul Township. The regiment left Minneapolis for duty on October 10, 1862 at Fort Snelling in Manitoba. Upon arrival at Fort Snelling, members were Basic Training before being sent overseas to fight in World War I. In 1919, Roseville became home to Camp Roberts where men from all over Minnesota gathered for maneuvers designed to improve training methods and increase efficiency within the Military Police Service. From 1934-1935, soldiers from Camp Roberts served as part of American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) stationed in Europe during World War II. During this time period, Camp Roberts also became known as “The Big Apple” due its production rate for rubber boots used by troops on European battlefields. In 1951-1952, Camp Roberts relocated to an installation located northumberland County near Hibbing when that county accepted responsibility for military support services within neighboring counties. Today there are more than 5500 active duty members assigned within both states Defense Equal Opportunity Commission (DEOC) which is funded through property taxes levied by MNsure insurance company; state police barracks located just west off US 169 near Germantown; battalions/squadrons headquartered at Army Garrison Elmendorf (formerly North Dakota State Fairgrounds); and detachments stationed throughout western MN including: 1st Brigade Combat Team (Hilliard), 2nd Brigade Combat Team (Minneapolis), 3rd Brigade Combat Team (St Cloud), 4th Brigade Combat Team (Morrisdale), 6th Brigade Combat Team (Eagan) and 8th Brigade Combat Team(Roseville). These units are brigades sized between 30-500 troopers each which make up infantry divisions sized anywhere from 50-1 thousand individuals depending upon troop strength requirements or mission assignments
