The area now known as Rosemount was first settled by pioneers in 1854. In 1881, a post office called "Rosemount" was established; it changed its name to "Hennepin" in 1903. Hennepin County was organized on November 3, 1858, from part of Dakota Territory. The town of Rosemount began to form around 1889 when settlers decided to move away from what they saw as harsh winters and difficult land conditions in Dakota Territory. By 1905, most of the original residents had moved out and new ones were recruited from surrounding towns and villages. The Minneapolis-based Wolff Rubber Company bought land east of the city limits in 1909 for a rubber factory that would eventually become Wolff- leased land to establish a second industrial park south of downtown Minneapolis with 10 million square feet (9 ha) of floor space including three warehouses and an automobile assembly plant employing 1,000 workers during World War I (Wolff also built a large home here.) When World War II started there were fears this new industrial park might be used for munitions production but instead it became one of the most important nodes in suburban development after demand for housing increased following victory over Nazi Germany
