The United States Air Force deployed a gift to the Rosemount community on Dec. 5, 1941. The gift was two Curtiss R-8s, serial numbers 43-1120 and 43-1130. They were delivered to the airfield at Montrose in Minnesota as part of the Army's emergency response during World War II. The Curtiss planes were originally donated by Mr. and Mrs. John Ahern of Montrose, Minnesota and had been stored at their home since they were received in 1941. In 1948, when it was decided that the planes would be turned into a museum for local residents, Mrs. Ahern donated all of her possessions - including the plane engines - to the museum in honor of her husband who had died in 1945 while serving with the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Since then, both planes have been used for various purposes within the Museum until they were finally retired from service in 1992 and put up for sale in 1996. At that time, they sold for $6700 each! In 2007, they again went up for sale but this time fetched only $4000! After being on display at an auction house for several years, they finally sold for $2 million on Nov 15th 2017 just days before their original donation date! This donation is also significant because it marks the first time a military aircraft has ever been given away as a gift to a community in Rosemount! Now that both planes are preserved and available to visit every day by members of the public through our website or through our museum tour program (which begins every week), it is important to remember how special these gifts truly are and how much Rosemount means to those who gave them away!
