The Rochester, Minnesota Naval Shipyard was established in 1912 as a result of the Great Depression. The Yard became active during World War II and produced warships for both the Navy and the Marine Corps. In 1945, the Yard closed due to budget cuts but it reopened in 1951 as a naval shipbuilding center. The yard produced vessels for both NATO and the United States Navy until it closed again in 1996. Today, the yards are used primarily for repair and renovation of older ships. Naval Shipyards were first established during World War I as an effort to build warships quickly using surplus civilian materials. By 1922, however,armor-plated ships had become standard on U.S. fleets and large navies began to build warships from scratch with government assistance. During World War II, navy builders shifted their focus from armor plating to design new classes of warship including destroyers (1940), cruisers (1941), submarines (1942), amphibious assault ships (1945), aircraft carriers (1946) and battleships (1947). By 1951, when the Rochester Naval Shipyard reopened after being shut down during the war years, warship production had turned into a major arms industry with navy builders producing over 50 different types of vessels ranging in size from coastal fishing boats to supertankers. After World War II ended, navy builders turned their attention once again toward designing new classes of warship including destroyers (1948), cruisers (1950–51), submarines (1952–54), amphibious assault Ships/ landing Crafts(1966–68), aircraft Carriers/ Helicopter carriers(1972–74) and battleships/ battlecruisers(1977). By 1996 this process had reached its peak with over 60 different types of vessels being built at Rochester Naval Shipyard alone! This level of output is much greater than any other naval shipyards in world history; testament to how important our navy is to America’sdefense!
