The Rochester Coffee Commission was created in 1907 to promote and oversee the coffee industry in the city. The commission's first meeting was on October 1, 1907. In 1912, the commission changed its name to the Rochester Coffee Board. The board continued to exist until 1945 when it was disbanded because of prohibition. In 1915, a new coffee roasting company was founded in Rochester by J.E. Muller and Wm Fenton. In 1916, Muller became the president of the company and continues to be responsible for its Daybreak brand today. Muller also founded Schmidt's Coffee which served as a subsidiary of Muller until 1984 when it merged with Peet's Coffee Company. Both Muller and Fenton were highly respected within their respective fields and are considered major contributors to early American coffee history. Today, Muller remains active as an advocate for quality coffee while his grandson John E Muller Jr., continues to run Schmidt's Coffee as a family business in Rochester, Minnesota.

Rochester is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, on the east bank of the Saint Lawrence River. The population was 51,521 at the 2010 census. Rochester is one of two cities in Minneapolis County, and also has a suburban area called Midtown Rochester which surrounds downtown. The first permanent settler in what is now Rochester was John Smeaton who arrived in 1763 from England. He named his new land "Rochester." In 1824, Ebenezer Wright moved to Rochester from Canada and started an insurance company there that continues to operate today as Eckerd & Co.. In 1858, Thomas Edison built a smallpox dispensary here and named it Edison Institute after him. The institute closed in 1936 but reopened as a museum several years later.
