Rochester, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Hennepin County. The population was 57,865 at the 2010 census, making Rochester one of the most populous cities in Minnesota. It is also the largest city inMN without a suburb and one of the most diverse cities in America. Rochester's rich history can be traced back to its founding as a small French trading post by Pierre Charles de Lacrosse on Lake Superior in 1785. In 1825, Rochester became an incorporated town and developed as a manufacturing center for boots, saddles, clothing and other goods exported to Great Britain through Buffalo Bayou. The city grew rapidly during World War I with munitions production and wartime housing demand; however, after the war ended, Rochester declined until it regained its former growth rate during the late 1990s through aggressive marketing efforts targeting Hispanics and young professionals. The current name "Rochester" was given to it by General Anthony Wayne on July 26th 1827 when he named it after his brother-in-law Sir John Augustus Fenton who had led an unsuccessful British invasion forces into Canada that year. At that time, only about 10% of Rochester was white European American while 90% were Native Americans including many Dakota Sioux refugees from Indian Wars fought between 1876 and 1890. Although Native Americans had inhabited this area for centuries before European settlement there are no records of them living here permanently until 1785 when Pierre Charles de Lacrosse set up shop hereafter trading goods with Indians along what is now called Buffalo Bayou
