The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Rochester were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1664 and 1665. They named the settlement after Henri de la Mothe Cadillac, Sieur de ROCQUEZ (1621-c1702), captain general of France's forces during the Seven Years' War (1754–63). Cadillac had been brought up at La Pointe aux Meadows near present-day Rochester, Michigan by his father, Louis Cadillac (1576-1653). It was while living there that he met Pierre Charles de Montcalm (1605-1674), Marquis de Chateaubriand (1ère partie du nom du marquis René Descartes) and Jean Baptiste Le Vierge François d'Allemagne (1723-1792), all friends from Paris who were traveling through North America on their way to meet General James Wolfe at Quebec City in 1759. When Cadillac learned that France was losing the war he decided to return home before supplies ran out and continued westward overland until he reached Canada on July 1, 1666—the first European Englishman ever to enter North America. He had received news of the English victory at Monmouth Court House near Cape Cod just two weeks earlier. On July 12 he founded Detroit, Michigan; it became a British colony under Hudson Bay Company control but reverted back to French control following its independence from Great Britain in 1763. Rochester, Minnesota is a small city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the border of the counties of Ramsey and Hibbing. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census. Rochester is one of nineteen cities in Minnesota that are considered official "douglasiana" metropolises – meaning their downtowns are home to significant concentrations of Douglas fir trees and other tree species characteristic of greater Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Rochester were French Canadians who arrived during the 17th century and named it Nouvelle-Orléans after their king's palace in France. By 1824, when a post office was established there, Rochester had become an important center for fur trader activity due to its location near Hennepin County's two major river valleys: the Red River Valley and Superior River Valley. During World War I, General John A. Pershing visited Rochester on 11 December 1918 as part of his military tour through America. He ordered all American troops stationed in Europe to be withdrawn by 1 January 1919 and he made this visit as part of his campaign to show friendliness to European allies before their war against Germany began that year. On 10 October 1922, Anthony Eden became Prime Minister of Great Britain following his victory over Sir Winston Churchill in the general election that year; he stayed at The Belvedere Hotel in Rochester while visiting New York City on 13 October 1922 before returning home via train on 15 October 1922 reports The New York Times . On 22 September 1932, Mayor Terence Rourke (D) announced plans for a new large municipal hall which would seat 4500 people within five years and be used for civic meetings hearings hearings county elections court cases school board meetings city council meetings as well as business meetings for both local governments including township councils village councils etc... At this time Rochester residents also voted approval for a $10 per month property tax increase which became effective 1 November 1932 which affected all citizens with an assessed valuation value over $50 . In 1933 Mayor Rourke proposed annexing neighboring townships into our municipality but these proposals were not accepted.. In 1935 we amalgamated with neighboring town Hibbing forming an extremely populous municipality with 9 wards plus 2 precincts which increased our size from 97 square miles or 3/5ths acreage to 299 square miles or almost one third acreage... During World War II us military personnel rotated through our community serving on various combat units including tanks artillery infantry dive bombers bomber anti aircraft rockets fighter planes naval vessels submarine minesweeper lighthouse patrol boat army Air Corps Landing Craft Squadron One hundred fifty nine soldiers served out between 1942nd 1945U S Army Colonel Augustus Dickey commanding officer US Army Garrison Force detachment Camp Robinson outside present day RochestownMinnesota street name unknown
