The history of the Rochester, Minnesota Army National Guard began in 1917. The first unit organized in the city was Company C, 2nd Infantry Regiment. However, this company only served for a year and a half due to World War I. In 1920, the 3rd Infantry Regiment arrived in town and quickly became one of the most powerful units in the Guard. In 1941, Company A was activated and soon became known as "the Luckies". The unit served during World War II until it was disbanded in 1945. After the war, Company A continued to serve through various expansions and reorganizations until it finally left the Guard in 1957. Today there are over 100 Soldier companies serving with our military! Each company has its own unique story that is full of patriotism and heroism. From World War II to today, our Military men and women have given their all for their country-a proud tradition that will continue for many years to come!

The Rochester, Minnesota National Guard has been in existence since 1876. It is the oldest National Guard organization in Minnesota. The Guard was first activated as a Militia regiment on November 15, 1876. The Regiment was redesignated the 122nd Infantry Regiment on October 25, 1890. On December 10, 1907 the Regiment was reorganized and redesignated as the 82nd Infantry Regiment. The unit lost its regiment designation on September 1st, 1959 when it became part of the Minnesota National Guard Association.

Rochester, Minnesota is a small town located in Humphrey County, Minnesota. The population was 556 at the 2000 census. Rochester was founded in 1857 by George and Lucy Smith. It was named for Rochester, New York. Rochester is located on the Mississippi River and has a humid continental climate (Köppen: Dfb). The median temperature in Rochester during the summer months averages 38°F (2°C), while the winter temperature average falls to 0°F (-18°C). Precipitation totals around an annual average of 51 inches (1,500 mm). The community began as sawmill town on the banks of the river. The first mill opened in 1840 and produced flour for local markets. By 1850, other businesses had opened including a store, school house and post office. In 1865, the first automobile dealership was established in Rochester with three cars models: Ford Model T’s and two Harleys; Harley-Davidson started making motorcycles later that year too. The mill closed down in 1976 but reopened as a museum in 1984 with exhibits about early industrial life and how it affected everyday life on Long Prairie Road near downtown Rochester.
