Robbinsdale is a small town in Minneapolis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. Robbinsdale is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name "Robbinsdale" is derived from John Robbins, who settled there in 1851. Robbinsdale's first settlement was on an island in the river of the same name off of Interstate 94 and it took until 1861 for all of Robbinsdale to be incorporated as a town because some residents wanted to keep their farmsteads separate from the new community on I-94. The Robbinsdale post office opened in 1865 and remained open until it closed in 1975. The current post office building was built in 1984 and serves as the town hall. In addition to its namesake John Robbins, other early settlers include Hialeah (1863), Vernon (1864), Spring Lake (1868), Riceville (1872), and Park Rapids (1901). In 1907, businessman Harry Smith built what would become one of Robbinsdale's most famous landmarks - his own glass factory which he named "Smith Glass". After several years of operation, Smith sold his business to Vail Glass Works Incorporated in 1954 and it continues production today as Vail Glass Corporation.
