The Robbinsdale Army National Guard's history goes back to World War I. The first unit to be activated in the war was the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment, which arrived in France on October 16, 1918. The regiment fought and died in the Battle of Belleau Wood, where it was badly mauled by German forces. The 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment was not the only unit activated in France; the 2nd Minnesota Infantry Regiment also arrived on October 16th. This regiment served until November 11th when it returned home for winter training at Camp Chase in Illinois. On December 3rd, 1918, both regiments were ordered to join General John J Pershing's American Expeditionary Force (AEF) at Nice, France as part of his "Great White North" offensive against Germany and Austria. On January 9th 1919, both regiments learned they would be returning home soon- but before they left for America they participated in a large parade through town streets and onto the Uptown Bridge into Robbinsdale. The march attracted attention from all over America due to its size and location- something that would not happen again until World War II! Robbinsdale is a small town in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, located about 20 miles east of Minneapolis and 10 miles west of St. Paul. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bloomington–Normal School District and the Robbinsdale Park District. The first white settlers in Robbinsdale were farmers who arrived in 1857. They developed a small farm economy based on raising corn, beans, potatoes and hay. In 1871, they built a sawmill and began to export lumber from their land to other parts of Minnesota and Iowa. The town's name honors General James Wahlgren, who served as commander of Union Army troops during the American Civil War. During World War II, Robbinsdale was one of several towns that made use of circular sawmills to produce munitions for the war effort. After the war ended, many residents left Robbinsdale for new jobs opportunities elsewhere in the Twin Cities Area or outside Minnesota altogether. However, some stayed until the early 1990s when most business assets were sold off to local competitors within a few years of each other within what is now known as "The Great Recession."
