The Navy was deployed in Ramsey, Minnesota during the Vietnam War. The first people to live in Ramsey were Scottish immigrants who arrived in 1851. They built their homes on land donated by General John A. Macdonald. The Scots-Irish settlers started farming around 1800, but they did not start trading until after the American Revolution when they became citizens of this country. They soon discovered what great opportunities America had to offer for their kind: land, education, free speech and religious freedom! Their descendants continue to play an important role in society today through business ownership, political activism and service to their communities. Ramsey was founded in 1856 by Phineas Rasmus Ramsey and his wife Margaret. The Rasmussons had emigrated from Norway and were farmers. They built a log cabin on the present site of Ramsey in 1857. In 1880, they purchased land east of town and began to build a sawmill. The mill was started in 1881, and it became the first commercial paper mill in Ramsey. In 1912, the Ramseys donated land to make room for the new school building. The school was opened in 1913. In 1925, they donated land to become the first municipally owned waterworks system in Ramsey County. The waterworks system was used until 2002 when it was sold toMinnesota Hydro Incorporated.
