Ramsey is a small town in the Minnesota State Capitol district. The population was 1,646 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Ramsey is named for General John Ramsey, who fought in the American Civil War and who later became the first U.S. Ambassador to Japan. The village of Ramsey was platted in 1854 by John Smeaton and others as a place where people could buy land for farming or other purposes. The community grew rapidly during the 1860s when there were large sales of land around here for farmsteads, mills, professional farms and citrus orchards. By 1870, there were schools, churches and businesses in what was then just a small hamlet of about fifty homes. In 1876, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Ramsey on his way from Stroudsburg to Minnesota's capital City to urge settlers to move into territory he had won in the Mexican-American War; many did so within months of his visit. Soon after that, businesspeople and farmers began expanding into what would become Ramsey with help from $5 per acre (USD) assessments levied on lots acquired during that time period – one which continues to be assessed today albeit at a lower rate than it once was due to inflation). By 1880, there were two stores, three hotels and twenty-five dwellings plus five schoolhouses located hereabouts; all but one now date back more than half a century since they were built – an impressive accomplishment considering that Farmington Township had been established only two years earlier! A post office opened here in 1881; it closed twelve years later due to low demand from local residents despite periodic mail delivery being available through horse drawn wagons! In 1896–97 construction began on what became known as "The Grand Central", an imposing four story limestone structure designed by architect George Prentice in collaboration with architects Jens Jensen & Co.; itspletion marked not only a turning point for this little village but also signaled newfound importance for Ramsey as both state capital and commercial center for central Minnesota – something which has continued unabated even amid continuous economic decline throughout recent decades!
