Air Force gift history in Ramsey, Minnesota goes back to the early 1940s when the United States Air Force was formed. The USAF’s first stationed in Minneapolis, it soon became apparent that there were not enough airplanes or missiles to cover all of the bases dotting the Twin Cities region. So, in 1941, General Curtis LeMay order the construction of two Boeing 247 airliners – one for general purpose and one as a military reconnaissance airplane. These planes would be used for surveillance and mapping missions over Minnesota during World War II. After the war ended, General LeMay ordered another Boeing 247Ato be built for use by Air Forces Korea. This plane was nicknamed “The Blue Bomber†because its blueprints were similar to those used by America’s bomber pilots during World War II. It flew over South Korea from Andersen AFB until 1953 when it was decommissioned and scrapped. In 1947, General Hoyt Sperry decided to establish an air force missile testing range within reach of Ramsey Airport. He requested donations from local businesses and citizens in order to build this range which eventually became known as Missile Range 3 (MR3). The range consisted of a number of vacant land parcels donated by locals and government employees. To date, MR3 has been responsible for launching more than 100 missiles into orbit than any other spot in North America! In addition to testing missiles at MR3, members of the USAF also conducted training flights using L-5E Little Old Lady bombers at nearby Lowry AFB between 1951-1952! Throughout its history, Ramsey AFB has played host to numerous USAF units including: UH-1 Hueys (1948-1949), A-4 Skyhawks (1957-1959), F-4 Phantom Fighter Jets (1969), C-130 Hercules task forces (1985), KC–135 Stratotankers (1991/1992) and EB–2C Big Eagle strategic bombers operated out of Ellington Field near Dallas TX between 1994 and 1997! Today, Ramseur AFB houses both USArmy Aviation Command elements – 8th Mountain Division Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HQHC) located on Peterson Institute Campus; 21st Space Wing Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron located at Wright Patterson AFB; 82nd Airlift Wing located adjacent to Kirtland Municipal Airport; HQ 9th Special Operations Wing based at Grand Forks International Airport; 1st Bombardment Group flying Wild Weasels from Eglin AFB FL);[and]the Minnesotan Air National Guard's 149th Tactical Airlift Wing operating EC–130H Commando aircraft assigned throughout MN!]

In 1970, the USAF announced its program to gift aircraft and subsystems to other countries. The first recipient was Egypt who received an A-10 Thunderbolt II Warthog trainer. The next year, Greece received a MiG-21bis Fighter Jet. In 1972, Vietnam received a F-105 Thunderchief fighter jet. In 1973, the United States gifted a McDonnell Douglas C-5 Galaxy transport plane to the Royal Jordanian Air Force. The last recipient of an airframe and subsystem from the USAF was Egypt in 1978 when they received an F-14 Tomcat fighter jet as part of their ongoing military assistance program with the USA
Ramsey is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Ramsey were Germans who came to the area in 1854 and 1855. The town was named for General John Ramsey, commander of Union forces during the American Civil War. A post office was established in 1857, and by 1870 it had a population of 100 people. In 1880, a sawmill and gristmill were built in the town; these continue to be operational today. The first school was opened in 1861; it served as a day school until 1915. The first store opened in 1872; it continued to serve as a business until 1951. In 1912, Ramsey became one of several towns that formed the city of Minneapolis through an act of Congress known as the New Deal local government consolidation Act (LGA). The city annexed parts of neighboring towns including Maplewood and Bloomington on May 3, 1912 – making Ramsey one of only two towns within Minneapolis that did not become part of its expanding boundaries at that time. In 1916, when Minneapolis-Saint Paul merged into Chicago), Ramsey became one municipality within that larger city limits but remains village status today due to its small size relative to other municipalities within Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area (the combined population for all villages within MNMSAs is over 1 million). When Stroudsburg Township was admitted into MNMSAs on February 14th 2014 they also lost their village status with no change to their residents or services provided by their governing body: the township council instead meets solely through online meetings which are open to all members regardless of residency or online subscription status.) Ramsey was first settled in 1846 by the brothers John and Nicholas Ramsey. The town was named after General Abraham Ramsey, who had been commander of Minnesota's Second Infantry Regiment during the Mexican-American War. The community grew rapidly due to its location between two major Indian reservations, and it became a commercial center with a grain elevator, grocery store, and other businesses. In 1912, Ramsey became a city when it merger with nearby Thief River Falls.
