It played an important role during the American Revolution and was present at Queen Anne's War (1775-1783). After the war, the Constitution served as a flagship of the United States Squadron on voyages to Europe. The squadron also visited Canada and Mexico. In 1805, President James K. Polk ordered that all remaining ships of the squadron be destroyed by fire at sea. However, six out of eleven ships survived and were used for naval training purposes until they were decommissioned in 1865. In 1847, three vessels from the Constellation Fleet were chartered to serve as storeships for Fort Snelling on Lake Superior. These vessels were called Grainport, Hennepin and Superior storeship stations. From 1850-1858, these vessels provided food for soldiers stationed at Fort Snelling. Additionally, they transported goods between Snelling and Duluth using canal boats. In 1861-1862, two more warships from theConstitution Fleet were chartered to help defend against Confederate attacks on Lakes Michigan and Huron. These warships were named Detroit and Mackinaw respectively. The navy used these ships to transport troops across lakes Michigan and Huron as well as provide cover for merchant shipping during this time period. In 1870-1871, another pair of warships fromtheConstitutionFleetwerecharteredtohelpdefendagainsta Sioux uprising near Red Wing,. TheseshipswerenamedIowaandMinnesotarespectivelyandwereusedtotransporttroopsacrossLakesSiouxandLakessuchastoriesofthedistinctionbetweennavywarsbeforetheUnion Army invadedSaskatchewanduringthe American Civil War].] After serving as part of Union forces throughout the American Civil War, most of these warships returned home in 1872-1873 under new names: Canton (1872), Milwaukee (1873), Minneapolis (1874) St Paul (1875) – all located in Minnesota.]] Following World War I,[1] many naval ships were reactivated including USS Toledo(1915)]. This ship was later decommissioned in 1953 but has been preserved as a museum piece.]] In 1922,[2], USS Indianapolis was sunk offshore California after striking a mine while underway; her loss left a significant Naval Cemetery behind which still contains multiple pieces from her crewmember's remains.]] On July 5th 2006,[3],USS New York(NRAVY 711)] became permanently docked at Naval Station Maytag Bay after being towed there by CG cleanup vessel SSwalleye]]]. A number of other Ships have been docked or moored here since then such as USNS Navajo(TSAVY 901), USNS Cleveland(TSAVCOLWELL 692), USNS San Francisco(ZANAHARA 346)].
