Prior Lake was a major center of industry in the early 1900s. The area now known as Prior Lake was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1855, Minnesota Territory was created from parts of Wisconsin and Iowa, and it included what is now Prior Lake. The town was named for Captain John Prior, one of the first white men to land in the territory. By 1871, Prior Lake had about 150 residents. In that year, a sawmill and gristmill were built on the southern shore of prior lake. The mills produced flour, sugar beets, oats, hay and other commodities until 1935. During World War I when Minneapolis-Streator bombed an oil refinery near Prior Lake on July 20, 1915 (destroyed today), local residents raised money to rebuild the refinery while they still could using proceeds from selling gasoline at their storehouses. The community slowly started to decline during the 1920s as more industries moved out of town or closed down due to competition from other towns inMinnesota or outside of Minnesota. However, there were some small businesses that survived until around 2005 when they went out of business because they did not have internet services then or because they could not compete with larger companies like Amazon or Walmart who had better prices and delivered faster service than these smaller businesses could offer online
