In 1917, a new terminal for the Port of Duluth was built and the Coast Guard began receiving delivery of goods from ships at this new location. A gift shop was also built adjacent to this terminal. In 1929, a radio tower was erected in front of the port and it became known as “The Tower”. In 1940, an icebreaker called HMCS Windsor arrived in Lakeshore Bay and acted as command center for operations across all Minnesota waters during World War II. In 1945, another ship arrived at the Port of Duluth which became known as HMCS Sioux City. It remained here until 1966 when it moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario where it remains today.
