After Sarah's death in 1839, James took over running the store and family until his death in 1912. In the 1840s, a group of men from Maynard County began exploring Canada for land west of the Mississippi River. They called themselves "The Sioux", because they wanted to find an area where Native Americans could live peacefully with white people without fighting. One member of this group was John Armstrong (1802-1868), who came to Plymouth on horseback in 1846 as part of a wagon train led by General David Hunter Silliman (1784-1872). Armstrong founded Armstrong Manufacturing Company in 1850 and became one of the most important entrepreneurs in early Plymouth Township history. Armstrong manufactured goods such as flour, feed grains, saddles, horseshoes, boots and clothing for farmers all over Minnesota and Wisconsin. He also built a large home near Center Street and First Avenue in downtown Plymouth that served as both business headquarters and social center for many years. Later on, other pioneer entrepreneurs like Ebenezer Eaton (1811-1881) established businesses around Center Street including Grain Elevator Co., Weiser Meat Market & Grocery Co., Grand Rapids Mercantile Exchange & Trust CO., Menard’s Drug Store & Grain Millinery CO., Edwin Haggerty’s Clothing Emporium CO., J C Reilly’s Ice Cream Parlor CO., Alanson Brewing Co., Alexander Gartner’s Furniture Store & Shop CO., Alderney Glass Workshops
