In Plymouth, Minnesota, the shooting of a deputy by a white man in 1887 was one of the most notorious cases in history. The events that transpired on November 1st were so extreme and heinous that they have become known as the "Plymouth Massacre." The assailant, John Nicolay, had been released from prison after serving time for a previous crime. He traveled to Plymouth and began randomly shooting people in the town. Sheriff Lewis Fletcher took measures to protect his citizens, but it was too late; Nicolay had killed deputy Tom Doherty and injured three other people before being shot by Fletcher. Nicolay's rampage has been chronicled in various books and articles over the years, but what is still not fully known is how this tragedy may have unfolded if not for a family member who stepped up to stop him. In order to commemorate these anniversary moments, we are honoring Mrs. Doherty with an article about her role in History's Most Famous Shooting Incident. Mrs. Doherty was born into a poor farming family near Plymouth just after World War I when America entered into its second world war. Her father died when she was young, leaving her mother to provide for her six children on their own farmstead. In 1932, Mrs. Doherty married George Doherty Jr., also from humble origins; he would later become an attorney and serve as county prosecutor in Plymouth County at its peak during the 1970s and 1980s). As fate would have it, both George Sr.'s daughters would marry men with criminal backgrounds - one of which would lead them down paths of bloodshed: Mrs. Doherty's niece Willie Hill became involved with Kenneth Reardon while she still lived at home with her parents; within two years Hill had committed four murders across four states before eventually being caught and sentenced to life imprisonment at State Penitentiary At Leavenworth where he met his future wife Karen (the couple divorced after Hill's release). Karen became pregnant again while incarcerated but upon release decided against having another child due to social stigma attached thereto; instead she adopted two boys from China whom she raised until their deaths at age 11 in 2001-2002 (Karen also fathered a third son via adoption). Plymouth is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, and it is the seat of Plymouth County. The population was 1,735 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern bank of the Mississippi River, about west-northwest of Minneapolis and east-southeast of St Paul. The area that became Plymouth was first settled by Native Americans in this location in 1825. The first white settler in Plymouth was Andrew Jackson, who arrived there in 1829 with his family as part of a wagon caravan from St Louis, Missouri. Jackson helped to found Plymouth along with other early settlers Isaac Harmon and Samuel Chase. In 1847, General Zachary Taylor founded Fort Snelling near present day Plymouth while he was general commanding American forces during the Mexican War. The fort served as a trading post and storage depot for goods moving upriver from Minnesota Territory to Mexico City before falling into disrepair and being abandoned in 1849. In 1865, when America gained its independence from Great Britain, General William Tecumseh Sherman built Fort Snelling as part of his strategy to keep Mexican forces away from vital routes connecting Illinois with Mexico City; it remained an active military installation until its closure in 1991). During World War II, several hundred residents took up arms against Nazi Germany at nearby Birch Bayou Naval Air Station (now known as Birch Bayou Park). Most of these residents were United States citizens who had volunteered their time or resources to help Allied forces fight what they saw as a world threat rather than support Nazi Germany (although some soldiers did serve side by side with Nazis).[1] After the war ended, many people left Plymouth due to social changes associated with postwar suburban living patterns: single women moved out after becoming available through marriage licenses issued after 1945[2], black families moved into new housing developments,[3] young men received jobs outside their homes,[4][5] and families started giving up their children for public schools[6]). Plymouth is a town in Plymouth County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Paul metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1854 by Norwegian emigrants and settlers from Sør-Varanger on the east coast of Norway as a small farming community named Hjelmeland. The name was changed to Plymouth Township in 1885 and then to Plymouth Borough in 1907. The first settler in Plymouth was Ole Christensen, who arrived from Kristiansand, Norway in 1853. He raised crops and bought land around what is now the intersection of US Highway 6 and US Highway 281. In 1855, he married Jane Klinefelter and together they started a farmstead that would grow into one of the most significant townships in central Minnesota history. In 1870, Ole's son Ole Jenssen moved to Plymouth with his wife Emma and their two children Hans (1871) and Kirsten (1872). They set up a millinery business on Broadway Street near present day Main Street where they continued until it burned down in 1916. Ole Jenssen also played an important role during the early years of Plymouth Township's development as its first mayor and treasurer. He helped found the local school district (established 1865), donated land for a public library (1867), served on the township board of trustees (1910–1920), ran for office several times (including twice as mayor) and chaired the building committee for both the original courthouse built on State Road 3A(now US Highway 6) from 1913 to 1915, as well as for later buildings located at Fourth Street/US Highway 281 & Third Avenue/US Highway 6 & Seventh Avenue N.(now State Road 522). He also served as president of Pioneer Park District No. 1 which operated Pioneer Cemetery from 1889 until 1966; this cemetery remains one of Twin Cities' largest intact historic burial grounds today He died suddenly after suffering a heart attack at home on October 2, 1923 aged 73 years old. Of note are three markers placed within Pioneer Park District #1: marker #2 marks where he repurposed an old post office box into his home; marker #3 shows where he had his family's first Thanksgiving dinner celebrated outside their farmhouse against all odds just months after starting theirown home-becoming one of America's earliest successful turkey dinners

One other interesting piece about this pioneer era is that four members of Ole Jenssen's family immigrated with him when he did-his father Larsen Peder Olsen born November 12th 1792 ditto Olaf Peder Olsen March 9th 1800 both immigrants living aboard ship MV "Fortunato" departing Quedlinburg Denmark January 25 1847 bound for Stavanger Sweden arriving May 10th 1850 latitude 47 degrees north longitude 8 degrees W One can only imagine how difficult it must have been trying to raise such large families alone amidst difficult circumstances! Despite these challenges, however, Plymoth began becoming more prosperous each year thanks to its rapid growth during this time period due to burgeoning industry developing along nearby Red River Valley farmland including extractive mining operations such as oil shale extraction.

In 1911 Danish immigrant John Lammers purchased much of what remain today’s downtown businesses including hardware store Bendixs Helvete & Hardware Store Gossett’s Department Store Snively’s Grocery Friesland Drugstore Cook’s bakery - serving residents throughout much of downtown while additional businesses were relocated or closed elsewhere over time Downtown Development Authority current property owners bought included First National Bank building finally vacated by bank December 24 2005

In 1927 James Ewing opened his gas station across current day Second Avenue from Elmira Service Station which became known locally simply as 'Ewing's'. It remained open until 1978 when it closed due to gas prices being too high.
