The history of the coast guard in Plymouth, Minnesota starts with a donation by A.C. Moffat in 1907. The first Coast Guard Station was built at Seal Harbor on the south side of the river in 1907. The station was used to keep an eye on shipping and to help detain smugglers during the early years of the coast guard. The first Chief Petty Officer was awarded for his work at Seal Harbor in 1911. In 1951, a new station was built at Morningside Heights on the north side of town, used until 1957 when it was replaced by another station at East Lake that still remains in use today. In 1975, a new station was built at Superior along the shoreline and is still active today. Today, the Coast Guard has six stations across Minnesota providing law enforcement support as well as emergency services such as firefighting and search and rescue. These stations are manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week 365 days per year! Additionally, there are several unmanned vessels which provide security patrols along our coastline including two harbor patrol boats and four mine sweepers!
